Inspiron 1300 shuts down/off when connecting to USB ports!! Why?!

Question

Whenever i plug anything into my USB ports on my Inspiron 1300 it automatically just shuts off and i have to start it up again. When i start it up again it comes up with a message saying that my laptop automatically powered off due to overheating, but this isn't even why it powered off.   Why is it shutting off whenever i connect anything via USB?

Sounds like something - most likely, faulty USB ports - is causing a short circuit.

How can i solve this problem? Any ideas? I have a 3 year next business day hardware warranty on my laptop, should i contact Dell to sort it out for me as if it is a problem with the hardware, there's nothing i can do about it i assume?!

If the ports are faulty, the system board will need to be replaced - yes, by all means - call for support and repair.
