Thanks for links. It's suggested on one of those threads that it is delamination of the panel. That's what I'd concluded after reading other reports. The connection with S-IPS panels in new to me, although I've seen it reported on Apple Cinema Displays, which also use LG.Philips S-IPS panels. However, if it is delamination, it would seem to be a manufacturing defect, not necessarily related to the S-IPS panel technology.
