What graphics adapter are you using?
Are you booting into DOS or running it under Windows?
Is the display off center? Can you reposition it Using the OSD .
Have you tried Auto Adjust?
If I understand correctly, 720x400 is the DOS text mode resolution, 640x480 is graphics mode.
Is there an option in your application to change the display mode, or is the issue with the command line display?
Here are a few links I found that looked like they might be relevant.

Thank you so much gpro for providing help.

The problem is switching from Windows to MS-DOS mode and back.

I use Win98 and run in pure MS-DOS mode, not in a DOS box.

1. Graphics Adatper: It's on the motherboard. VIA S3, I think.  All my other CRT monitors switch to 640x480 with no problem.

2. The display is centered.

3. I tried Auto Adjust many times

4. 640x480 is text mode. There is no graphics mode in MS-DOS. You have to write your own code and supply your own fonts to use VESA to run graphics. However, Win98 crashes as soon as you try to run the program, so it's only good in pure DOS mode.

5. I have a lot of software that runs in MS-DOS mode. There is no option except to change the font size to get 55 lines instead of 25 lines. Most of the software can run either mode. But either way, the result is badly garbled in the Dell monitor running at 700x420 resolution.  Running in a DOS box in Win98 is also not an option. The box is very small and hard to read, and the cursor lag gives lots of typing errors.

Many many thanks in advance gpro if you could help me out :)

Thanks for the extra info but I'm afraid I couldn't find a solution - not too much info on DOS around these days :(
