No sound when copying from VCR to computer

I've tried using Windows movie maker, and MGI videowave III along with a VC-211A USB interface between VCR and computer and can get video fine, but get no audio. Interface is good (tested on old laptop) and connections are correct. I've tried both the line and mic inputs, and no sound. There's got to be something somewhere in the Dell that I'm missing. Any ideas??
