I had trouble too until i figured out that i had to make sure my fingertip rubbed against the glass on the reader .. once i got it it works everytime. I don't know if you tried that yet but worth a shot for you.
I received my 2nd new XPS M1530 on Wednesday July 23rd. However, I was travelling early Thursday morning and didn't have the the opportunity to set-up the new XPS M1530 until Saturday night. Sadly, the biometric scan did not function on this unit either.
On the first XPS M1530, which I received from Dell 3 weeks ago, the biometric scan would barely register anything. It was not sensitive enough and never registered one successful scan of any of my fingers or those of my wife.
On the new XPS M1530 the biometric scan actually seemed too sensitive but once again couldn't register even one successful scan of my fingers or those of my wife. I tried registering scans in both the tutorial and actual program modes at least one hundred times but none were successful.
I did call the excellent Dell XPS service line for both XPS's I have in my possession and utilized the Dell Connect service to try and resolve the the problem. Both times the Dell Tec's, Andrew and Von, were very thorough and diligent in trying to fix the problem but ultimately it was all to no avail. On the 2nd call the Dell Tec couldn't register a successful scan on the XPS at his office either.
I am in contact with the Dell consumer customer care manager as well as an executive support officer from Dell Canada. Hopefully someone can source a fully functioning XPS M1530 for me.
I have bought three Dell laptops, one Dell desktop, a Dell brand HDTV and many peripheral devices from Dell. I am disappointed with the long lead times for delivery of my most recent purchase and the fact the biometric scan doesn't work.

I agree with RYCK72... I tried following the instructions in the tutorial dozens of times, all with the exact same result - bad quality. Thought for sure that the device was defective. I then read a post on one of the internet forums that said you actually had to "smear" your finger across the glass. Once I tried this technique I was able to register 8/10 figers with no difficulty. Not sure if this is the correct method, but it works for me.
Thanks again bikerboy94 !! Once again you have assisted me!! That method worked for me as I was also having a great deal of difficulty getting it to even read 1 of my fingers!
Thanks bikerboy. This problem was ruining my otherwise very happy experience with my shiny new 1530! Everyone in the family had tried to swipe many times - we'd all watched the video.
After reading your solution it worked first time.
I'm amazed that a simple word "smear" can describe the necessary technique than the video!
Sadly, although I too smear my fingerprint it only works maybed 30% of the time on the first attempt. I have gone back to the old alpha-numeric typed log-in.
what works for me is to wet my finger and dry it off so its not too dry but moist then i slide my finger and it gets it every time. when my finger(s) are dry i,e, no skin oils, it wont read at all or at best error. but i moisten the finger, dry it on my shirt or whatever then use the reader and all is well.
I tried smearing my finger but it just keeps saying "too short" and i start at the bend also. Sometimes gives me the message really quick and sometimes it takes a few seconds but it allways does it. I've tried different fingers all with the same result.

I like the XPS M1530 but I am not impressed that Dell sells the units with a feature that does not work.

Hi bikerboy94 - it seems to work if I exert a little pressure and smear the finger over the scanner.
Thanks for the hint!
Manuel.

Thanks for the tip bikerboy. I tried your method on my replacement XPS M1530 and it worked on each finger of my right hand!
cheers!

This advice worked well for me. Smearing my fingers on the sensor did not work. My fingers were too dry.
