Latest drivers that Dell provides? Have you tried using the latest driver provided directly by Intel

Yes, thanks--checked Intel site and had correct driver for wireless mini card--but downloaded same [most current driver] directly from Intel, uninstalled existing copy and then installed new downloaded copy.  But now see there is also an "Intel PROWireless Drives" as well.  Can't find the software already installed and intel notes that laptop maker may have customized the software so must check with Dell first--and I want to back up my hard drive before I mess with any drivers now.  Thanks for your thought.

Check on the intel site.  It will tell you what security level has to be on your dlink for it to reach N level.

Might be worthwhile to test your (wireless) connection at another location - a friend's house - preferably w/ "N" capability.

Couple of tips:

- disable any other NICs

- disable indexing (windows search) and biometric (fingerprint) reader if you don't use it

- disable File Sharing and any Peer-to-Peer programs that might be occupying resources in the background

- disable Antivirus programs while "testing" OR remove them completely

- ensure you're only running 1 firewall (preferably Defender)

- install SP1 and any updates from Dell (remove any "beta" programs)

Hope this helps.

Thanks for your comment.  You're absolutely correct--a person needs to have WPA or WPA-2 encryption for level "N".  But I did in fact change from WEB which supports only levels "b" and "g" and changed to WPA-2 encryption a number of days before I posted my original post.  So I still need a solution.

And, BTW, I spoke with 3 Dell technicians, the first was having an apparently terrible personal day but each of the level 2 techs I spoke with on subsequently were both eespecially nice---though, in fact, neither was able to solve the problem and sort of left it as they were saying "well I can't help anymore--good luck with figuring it out".  I would have thought that the Dell knowledge base should have had a solution posted--and if somehow my expereince was the first occurrence of the problem, why wasn't it made an issue to figure out and add the so;ution to the knowledge base?  Dell gets failing marks on this response.  I thank everyone else for thinking about it and offering their thoughts.  And, yes, I'm still looking for a solution.

I have the same problem, XPS M1530, Intel 4965, D-Link DIR-655. I made some setting changes in the D-Link router that helped, but still the connection is terrible. Hoping someone knows what's going on.

I am also having a time with connection. Only good signal I get is when I am 2 feet away from the router. Other then that is blanks out on me trying to find connection and I bought this router cause it was 10x better and faster and wireless phones and tvs wouldn't bother it.  Right!

It might be the router and not my 1530 since the one from work to check it didn't work either. Hate spending more money when the thing is only 4 months old but it never had a good signal from day one!

Thanks for your imput.

I use a D-Ling extreme N gigabyte router and know it works with my desktop computer [made of components, not a Dell] using a D-link N level desktop card with which I get 300Mbps [full "N" level speed].  My XPS 1530--tested in the same physical space as the desktop receiving at 300Mbps usually gets below 54Mbps ["G" level speed] and only for the shortest periods received at 100 Mbps.  The Intel mini N wireless card was replaced by Dell with no improvement in performance so it is either a software or settings glich or --perhaps--that Dell never got the Intel mini N card to work at spec levels and just leaves it at that.  After all Dell technical support tried various things and when those failed to solve the problem in effect said there was no solution.  Really terrible on Dell's part but that is what I face subject to someone posting a solution they somehow may have come upon.

Thats strange.  I have a Dlink DIR-655.  Hooked it up no problems and my 2530 screams on it from anywhere in the house.  No Problems.
