Dell is notorious for taking orders for items on Dell.com before they are actually ready to begin mass production. A perfect example of this was the M1330 that was often plagued by delays and issues.

I was planning on buying a Mini 9 with Ubuntu to take on a trip later this month. I had waited all summer for Dell to begin selling the Mini 9. After stepping through the customization and filling in the shipping information I noticed the shipping date was five weeks out. Believe me, I was really disappointed.  Needless to say, I canceled the order; instead I ordered an Acer Aspire One from Newegg that was delivered in two days.

If Dell has the product in stock, it normally gets shipped right away. As for the Mini 9, when Dell gets enough orders to build a batch (probably in Taiwan)they will build and ship the batch.

I was thinking that... but since the hardware is so similar and there is so little customization capabilities, most of these have to already be sitting around pre-assembled, ready to go. Well, that is once Dell decides they need to actually get some stock.
