The M1530 has an 8600GT chip, not a card - and yes, it is one of those known to fail.

I'm still very skeptical...

If I get a Belkin Laptop Cooling Stand, will it reduce or eliminate the likelihood of the video chip failing?  Is overheating the cause of the chip failure?  What are chances of it failing with and without the cooling stand?

EDIT: Searching the forum I see a bunch of threads about the issue.  Judging by the definity of the issue I feel that I will eventually have to get the chip replaced no matter what I do, if I do get this laptop.  I just might downgrade to the Inspiron to be safe.  It won't play games well at all, but at least the video card won't fail.

Ok so ever since I've gotten my M1530, I've had a problem with the Video Card (8600M GT) underclocking during high stress online games.  I did months of research on this, thinking that it was a heating issue - IT'S NOT!  (Well, my problem wasn't... other's might be).  The problem ends up being a driver issue.  If you go with the Dell driver (175.97 driver, a driver just recently released by Dell that works rather well and is stable), then you will be fine unless another problem comes up.  My problem was that I was using an advanced driver (the 177.xx series from LaptopVideo2Go.com, a GREAT site), and that was causing the underclocking.  You get a lot more performance, but with less stability.

Other than the issue above (which isn't an issue anymore because I don't play the high stress game anymore, which was Age of Conan), the video card has been amazing and games run ridiculously fast.

With a cooling pad and updating to the A09 BIOS, you'll be fine.  Even without the cooling pad, you should be fine though.

Oh and BTW, I bought the 49.99 (might be less now) laptop cooler - the one that's jet black.  It's extremely nice and honestly - you get what you pay for.  If you can find it on the Dell website, which it should be there, go with it.  It's a great one.

i have read the bios upgrades for the nvidia chips that have be reported to have problem, video chipsets, that it speeds up the fan and delays some failures....i have had 2 laptops with the problem reported video cards...but mine did not have any problem...

nvida did take a charge of 250 million to cover problems with the laptop video cards.

its really hard to get any hard facts on this...like do all video cards fail....just a few, maybe 30 per cent- who knows

£49.99 / US$49.99?  NZXT Cryo LX?  Zalman ZM-NC2000?

Yeah, I think I'll go for an M1330 with the Intel Graphics x3100 just to be safe.

69c is not too bad,,,,at least i would not worried about it....there have been some that have their gpu temps in the high 80c, and that is a concern...the problem with the nvidia chips is that they are made of sub-stanard material that is affected by heat...there have been bios releases that will kick in the gpu fan soon, therefore prolonging the life of the video adapter.
