The G84 and G86 cards have the problems, not the go 7800GTX.
Now to get back to your post, all replacement parts are labeled as refurb. That does not mean they are inferrior parts, they are labeled like this for replacement. And dell does not have major video problems with there laptops.
Your NVidia Graphics Card needs to be replaced. Seems like is has overheated or the one they replaced has been faulty. I wouldnt be surprised that it was faulty. Nvidia is having issues with their GPU's.
A new video card??? Even though they already replaced it a year ago? Hmmm....so they're sending out faulty products? That's my conclusion. This laptop was already faulty...they sent me a refurbished product to replace my Inspiron 9300 that had major video problems. So they sent me this...and it was refurbished...and I had them send me a new video card...apparently Dell laptops have major video problems.
I got them to send me a video card, even though I was out of warranty, seeing as how they sent me a faulty product to start with, as a replacement. Of course I had to get someone to install it.
Ok, any other suggestions? Or does everyone think I need a new video card?
Well I've had this laptop for about 2 1/2 years now. I don't know how old it is, since it wasn't specifically made for me. I don't know if someone owned it before me or what.
And yes, based on all that I've read on these forums, it DOES seem like Dell laptops have major video problems. The problem is, they often can't fix their own problems (this includes desktops).
We're moving soon and then I will begin my letter writing process to Dell. It's just too bad that I pay so much for a computer and it has so many problems. I've also learned that if you have a VERY minor problem, it's better to ignore it. I had such a minor problem with my dell desktop and when they came to fix it, they caused an awful problem which made my desktop unusable except to surf the web. It took them over 6 months to replace it (after several tries to fix it, or even figure out what the problem was). Yes I'm a disgruntled customer.....wouldn't you be?
I really would like to fix my laptop problem, however, if it's too expensive, I will wait and purchase a different laptop in a year or so. We just bought my husband a Toshiba.....research (and people) says they have way fewer problems.
Maybe so, but out of the people I've talked to that have one or the other....nobody really ever had major problems with their Toshibas. So I guess I'm basing this on people I know and from things I've read. Thank you for the statistics though.
As for warranties. Well, I did have a warranty for my original 9300 laptop from Dell. But I don't consider sending me a bad product as a replacement to be warranty-worthy. I don't consider making me wait 6 months with a useless desktop (that they broke) only to replace it with a lesser one, that's 100 pounds heavier.....to be warranty-worthy either. I had an HP desktop before Hurricane Katrina, and I never had any major problems with that. I had it for quite a few years too. After that I was all Dell for the past 3 years. I won't make that mistake again. Maybe I was just unlucky with the products they sent me? I'm not saying this happens to everyone, but the fact that I've had major problems with all my Dell products (1 desktop and 2 laptops) within the last 3 years is pretty distressing, don't you think?
And yes, we bought a 3 year STORE warranty for the Toshiba. So I think we're set for that.
It's an unfortunate situation and I hope you have better luck with the replacements - the thing to bear in mind is that neither Dell nor Toshiba make notebooks - they label systems built by others. Your Dell notebooks were made by Quanta, which is Toshiba's largest supplier as well.
Translation: you just replaced a problematic Chevy with a Pontiac in all likelihood - same manufacturer, different nameplates.
They may say that, but it's not borne out by the statistics. 21% of Toshiba notebooks need major repairs within three years, vs. 22% for Dell - in other words, they're statistically the same reliability wise.
Make sure you bought the new system with a three year warranty, or you're statistically just as likely to be in the same boat as you were with your system, in another 2.5 years.
Have a look at Consumer Reports before you buy HP.
Remember that Quanta, which made your Dell, is the major supplier to all the major brands - they make more than one out of every three notebooks sold, regardless of brand.
Well not really. My husband had an HP laptop. And it's been great until now....he had it for 3 years without any problems. However, with the research we've done.....Toshibas seem to stand out more. And we found a good deal on one. So I didn't actually replace my dell with a Toshiba....YET!!! :)
Remember that Quanta, which made your Dell, is the major supplier to all the major brands - they make more than one out of every three notebooks sold, regardless of brand.
Including HP's? If so... why are HP's (apparently) so bad, compared to others?
Two strikes against HP/Compaq - their service and support is the worst out there, and should you need post-warranty repair, their part prices are astronomical. Ask HP what it charges for a notebook mainboard - be sure you're seated when you do. If you think the $400 Dell charges is bad, multiply that by 2-2.5 to get HP's charge for its parts.
