I had a very similar problem the other day with my Inspiron 530 (Windows Vista Premium) that is approximately the same age as yours. I went to pull an SD card out of the memory card slot in front of the computer and the screen went black. When I have had USB problems before with the slots in the front, I have rebooted and that usually restored them to work. I rebooted and on reboot I got the Dell splash screen and nothing else. I decided to disconnect all my USB attachments--Logitech mouse/keyboard,printer and APC support, pulled the AC power cord. When I replugged, everything loaded up fine. Is there some kind of fix for these USB problems? I thought I had downloaded the media card reader fix months ago but apparently there are still issues.
I frequently have similar problem with my Inspiron 530! Although my USB keyboard/mouse work, my USB printer and webcam will, after some period of being powered on, fail to respond, and I have to (try) to reboot.. Usually a Start/Reboot doesn't work and I have to force a power down by holding the power button.

Hello,
If the hub has a power cord, unplug it.
Not many USB devices require power from the USB, and your computer already powers the devices if they need.
Take a look at this Dell page and report back what you find out.
