I figured out eventually that it was 1920x1200 as well as a few other resolutions that would not work over DVI.
See what happens if you set other resolutions like 800x600 or 1024x768 resolution first over your Analog connection. Shut the system down, switch to DVI and see if you get anything then.
If you do get something, then perhaps see if you can get a hold of another DVI cable to try.

i have no picture.... no bios, no windows
on the vga the resolutions is 1920x1200
