Question

How do I maintain and clean the LCD screen on my Dell™ portable computer or flat panel monitor? Discussion A common cause for marks on a portable LCD is oil and dirt deposited on the keys of the keyboard that can get pressed against the LCD when carried in a carrying case or when pressure is applied to the lid. Cleaning There are many cleaning solutions sold specifically as LCD cleaners. You can use these to clean LCD screens on Dell notebooks or Dell flat panel monitors.  If you do not use one of these products designated specifically as an LCD cleanser, use isopropyl alcohol (IPA), which you can find in the grocery store, or water (preferably filtered). NOTICE:  Do not use any of the following chemicals or any solutions that contain them:  acetone, ethyl alcohol, toluene, ethyl acid, ammonia, or methyl chloride.  If you have a different chemical or solution and are not sure whether it is suitable, do not use it. Using any of the chemicals in the previous list may cause permanent damage to the LCD. Some commercial window cleaners contain ammonia and are therefore unacceptable. To clean the LCD display, use a soft, clean cloth (such as a lens cloth used to clean eyeglasses).  Moisten the cloth with the cleaner, and then stroke the cloth across the display in one direction, moving from the top of the display to the bottom.

Hello!   Have a problem!  My little 2 year old marked up my flat panel with pen marks and would like to know if there is any way of safely removing them without damaging the screen!  Scared to use something strong because I know not to use many things.  I heard that even lysol works well in getting pen out but not sure how it would act on the screen.   Would love some help and hope any of you have a quick fix solution.    Thank you so much for your assistance and look forward to a quick reply.   Best regards, Frodo!

Tap water and a clean soft cloth can leave a milky film.
Tap water and a clean soft cloth with a small trace of detergent can leave a milky film.

Minerals in tap water, rust from pipes are not good for LCD's either, might scratch them.

How to Clean the LCDUnplug or turn off your LCD screen or device and closely examine the condition of the screen.Take notice of any smudges or areas to be cleaned.Use a Microfiber Cloth to remove any obvious dust and gently brush off any dirt particles.Proper cleaning kits should be used to clean and keep your LCD displays in a crisp clear pristine condition.Never spray any cleaning solutions directly onto the screen, spray it into the cleaning cloth.Very gently wipe the screen in a circular motion. Do not press hard on the cloth. Let the cleaning solution do its job.Don't press hard or touch the screen with your fingers or you may leave oily prints and smears.Don't leave any liquid on the screen, remove all excess moisture as it may damage your screen.Let the LCD screen dry thoroughly before you switch it back on.For stains that are hard to remove, repeat this procedure several times.
