XPS 400

Hi,

My hard drive crashed so I bought a new HD.  I installed XP and I cannot find the driver for PCI Device.  In Device Manager, there's an exclamation point by the PCI Device.  Every time I reboot my pc and login, I get the install screen to install it.  I've been working trying to find the driver for the device since Sunday.  I tried Dell's driver page but no luck.  I emailed Dell and they were nice enough to send me the Dell XP Operating System and the drivers and utilities CD but it doesn't find the driver on either CD.  Since I can't find the driver for the PCI Device, my audio doesn't work and I really need it badly.  Does anybody have any idea what driver I can use to get this to work?

OK - I think we've got a terminology problem.  Bear with me.

The 400 came standard with 2 possible audio hardware options.   The "standard" option is Sigmatel integrated audio that's part of the motherboard, not a separate card; the jacks are in the middle of the tower.    The upgrade option was a Soundblaster X-Fi PCI card with the jacks at the bottom of the tower.    Either one could be the missing PCI device.

The Creative Audigy Invitation on the driver page is irrelevant - it's an application demo for a software add-on to the Sigmatel, not a device.

Offhand I'm guessing one of 3 things is  happening:  you're trying to install the wrong drivers,  XP is not detecting your hardware correctly because the chipset drivers are still not loaded right, or you have the Soundblaster card, but XP is actually detecting the integrated audio.

To narrow it down any further we have to know exactly which of the 2 hardware options (Sigmatel or X-Fi) you have.

I installed the Desktop System Software, rebooted, and then installed the Chipset.  If I have the standard PCI sound card which drivers should I use?

I installed both Creative Labs drivers but those didn't work.  Those drivers were located in the Drivers downloads area -

Any ideas?

I can't remember if I installed the desktop system software and the chipset in that order but they were installed.  I have the standard integrated audio.  I'll install the system software and the chipset again, in that order, to see what happens.  I'lll let you know if it works.  Thanks

Alexandra_P,

Thank You, Thank You, Thank You, Thank You - I could keep going.  The problem was the drivers. I tried the other drivers but didn't try the Sigmatel.  I thought the Sigmatel was the upgraded audio.  Wow, I'm so relieved.  I wish you were at the help desk when I called trying to get this to work.  Next time, I'll try the forums first.  Thank You again, you guys are great!!!!!!

Yes, the DSS and then the chipset in particular must be installed before the specific hardware drivers. Do that and then try the integrated audio driver shown in the audio downloads.

edit:  Sorry Alexandra, I didn't even see your reply with this ridiculous new system showing all of 2 or 3 posts per page.  We all must be gluttons for punishment even trying to deal with this, plus all the error pages encountered.

Glad it's all straightened out.   :emotion-2:

Going_Insane:  Just to test it I suggested Europa's post as an additional answer,  though I haven't figured out yet what that means.  If you don't mind helping us out a little I'm curious to see if it's possible for you to select it and have both show up as verified.

Europa - I wouldn't have jumped in your thread like that, but I was on an error-free streak and hoped you wouldn't mind.
