Ran the utility, then figured out that the computer was starting in safe mode because I had accidentally changed the startup properties to get the computer into safe mode and had not changed them back. When it started up it seemed to be working better. Didn't see any popups and the fake taskbar icon that was on there disappeared. The McAfee taskbar icon still seemed like it was acting funny. Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Then click Finish.
MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself.
Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates,
manually download them fromhere and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install. Alternatively, you can update through MBAM's interface from a clean computer, copy the definitions (rules.ref) located in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from that system to a usb stick or CD and then copy it to the infected machine.
On the Scanner tab:
Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
Then click on the Scan button.
If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top.
It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully.
Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
Back at the main Scanner screen:
Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note:-- If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you may be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process. Regardless if prompted to restart the computer or not, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.
-- MBAM may make changes to your registry as part of its disinfection routine. If you're using other security programs that detect registry changes (like Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere with the fix or alert you after scanning with MBAM. Please disable such programs until disinfection is complete or permit them to allow the changes.
If everything is running well after I review that log, we'll clean up our tools and flush System Restore.
I tried to do this. MBAM installed fine, and the updates worked (had to download mbam-rules.exe file since I don't have an internet connection on that computer at work). When I clicked on the MBAM it said The database you are using is not supported by this version of Malewarebytes' Anti-Maleware. Download the latest version of this program. I decided to go to MBAM's site and download the newest version of everything I could find just to be sure. Downloaded the newest MBAM version (1.31) and the newest updater (version 1442), uninstalled the old program, and rebooted my computer. I noticed the computer has been having unusually long restart times, and when the computer loaded it gave a message that said something along the lines of "Windows could not find C:\Program". I reinstalled MBAM with the installers I had just downloaded, but got the same error message.
** Because CCleaner removes everything in temp folders, if you have anything in a temp folder, back it up or move it to a permanent folder prior to running CCleaner.
** We will be cleaning cookies as well. Make a note of any passwords, etc. that you want to save. If you do not want to delete cookies, simply uncheck that option.
1. Before first use, select Options > Advanced and UNCHECK "Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours"
2. Then select the items you wish to clean up. In the Windows Tab:
Clean all entries in the "Internet Explorer" section.
Clean all the entries in the "Windows Explorer" section
Clean all entries in the "System" section.
Clean all entries in the "Advanced" section.
Clean any others that you choose. In the Applications Tab:
Clean all in the Firefox/Mozilla section if you use it.
Clean all in the Opera section if you use it.
Clean Sun Java in the Internet Section.
Clean any others that you choose.
3. Click the "Run Cleaner" button.
4. A pop up box will appear advising this process will permanently delete files from your system.
5. Click "OK" and it will scan and clean your system.
6. Click "exit" when done. REBOOT.
Please download and scan with SUPERAntiSpyware Free
Double-click SUPERAntiSypware.exe and use the default settings for installation.
An icon will be created on your desktop. Double-click that icon to launch the program.
If asked to update the program definitions, click "Yes". If not, update the definitions before scanning by selecting "Check for Updates". (If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here. Double-click on the hyperlink for Download Installer and save SASDEFINITIONS.EXE to your desktop. Then double-click on SASDEFINITIONS.EXE to install the definitions.)
In the Main Menu, click the Preferences... button.
Click the "General and Startup" tab, and under Start-up Options, make sure "Start SUPERAntiSpyware when Windows starts" box is unchecked.
Click the "Scanning Control" tab, and under Scanner Options, make sure the following are checked (leave all others unchecked):
Close browsers before scanning.
Scan for tracking cookies.
Terminate memory threats before quarantining.
Scan with SUPERAntiSpyware as follows:
On the main screen, under "Scan for Harmful Software" click Scan your computer.

If asked if you want to reboot, click "Yes" and reboot normally.
To retrieve the removal information after reboot, launch SUPERAntispyware again.
Click Preferences, then click the Statistics/Logs tab.
Under Scanner Logs, double-click SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log.
If there are several logs, click the current dated log and press View log. A text file will open in your default text editor.

Windows did not say what program it was trying to open, it just said it could not access "C:\Program" and said if I was trying to load something to use the start menu, or something along those lines. Also, I'm not sure if this affected the program, but while SUPERAntiSpyware was running, McAfee On Access Scan found 31 files it said were infected and deleted them. Boot up still seemed sluggish. Here are the Logs:
Run Disk Cleanup in each user's profile: Click "Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup" Please make sure only the following are checked:
-- Downloaded Program Files
-- Temporary Internet Files
-- Recycle Bin
-- Temporary Files
Click "OK" and Disk Cleanup will delete those files for you.
Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. It is possible that you may be running Java code in your applications that absolutely require a specific version of the JRE to run. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.
Scroll down to where it says Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 11 .
Click the "Download" button to the right.
Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
NOTE: As always during installations, beware of any pre-checked option to install a toolbar. If you do not want it, UNcheck it.
The page will refresh.
Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each of the Java versions. Close Add/Remove.
* In Windows Explorer, navigate to C:\Program Files\Java =this folder. Delete any subfolders. * Do NOT delete C:\Program Files\ JavaVM =this folder, if found!
Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u11-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
Please post a fresh HijackThis log and let me know how things are running. If the issue has been resolved, we'll remove ComboFix and flush System Restore. I suggest that you keep Super Anti-Spyware, though.
Computer seems to be running fine. Here's the log. Also, I was wondering, if I can get a working copy of MBAM, would that be better than the Super Anti-Spyware? Or should I have both?

To answer your question, I prefer MBAM. As long as you run one on demand having both SAS and MBAM is fine. I'm not sure why MBAM wouldn't run. There was a problem with McAfee and MBAM last month, but that was corrected, so as long as McAfee is updated, you should be able to run both.
I'll ask one of MBAM's developers to look at this thread. Maybe he can figure out what the problem was. I couldn't troubleshoot it at the time because of Dell's new forum software issues regarding posting, and we needed to get you cleaned up as soon as possible.
It's time for some housekeeping. Because the tools we used to scan the computer, as well as tools to delete files and folders, are no longer needed, they should be removed, along with the folders created by these tools. * Click Start then Run * Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Notice the space between the X and the /u
This will uninstall ComboFix. It will also implement some cleanup procedures and reset System Restore points.
The following suggestions are general prevention and are not customized for your computer. You may have already taken some of these steps, and depending on your current security, you may not need to implement all of these:
1. Visit Microsoft Update: Make sure that you have all the Critical Updates recommended for your operating system and IE. The first defense against infection is a properly patched OS. Microsoft's widows Update: http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp
4. Do not use file sharing. Even the safest P2P file sharing programs that do not contain bundled spyware, still expose you to risks because of the very nature of the P2P file sharing process. By default, most P2P file sharing programs are configured to automatically launch at startup. They are also configured to allow other P2P users on the same network open access to a shared directory on your computer. The reason for this is simple. File sharing relies on its members giving and gaining unfettered access to computers across the P2P network. However, this practice can make you vulnerable to data and identity theft. Even if you change those risky default settings to a safer configuration, the act of downloading files from an anonymous source greatly increases your exposure to infection. That is because the files you are downloading may actually contain a disguised threat. Many very malicious worms and trojans, such as the Storm Worm, target and spread across P2P files sharing networks because of their known vulnerabilities.
6. If you have not already done so, you might want to install CCleaner and run it in each user's profile: http://www.ccleaner.com/ ** UNcheck the option to install the Yahoo toolbar that is checked by default for the Standard version, or download the toolbar-free versions (Slim or Basic) when given the option for those.
7. Practice Safe Surfing with with TrendProtect by Trend Micro. This is not compatible with Firefox 3.0 yet. TrendProtect is a browser plugin that assigns a safety rating to domains listed in your search engine. TrendProtect also adds a new button to your browser's toolbar area. The icon and color of the button changes to indicate whether the page currently open is safe, unsafe, trusted, or unrated, or whether it contains unwanted content. The following color codes are used by TrendProtect to indicate the safety of each site.
Red for Warning
Yellow for Use Caution
Green for Safe
Grey for Unknown
8. Please go to Add/Remove Programs and remove Webtools.
Delete the folder here: c:\program files\Webtools
Following that, please see if you can post a Hijackthis log from normal mode. Let me know how things are running.

There is no Webtools in the Add/Remove Programs list, and the folder C:\Program Files\Webtools is empty (checked for hidden files and folders as well, there is nothing there).

Uninstall the copy of MBAM that would not run.
REBOOT.

MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
Alternatively, you can update through MBAM's interface from a clean computer,
copy the definitions (rules.ref) located in
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes'
Anti-Malware from that system to a usb stick or CD and then copy it to the infected machine.

Note:-- If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove,
you may be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process.
Regardless if prompted to restart the computer or not, please do so immediately.
Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

If you're using other security programs that detect registry changes (like Spybot's Teatimer),
they may interfere with the fix or alert you after scanning with MBAM.
Please disable such programs until disinfection is complete or permit them to allow the changes.
If everything is running well after I review that log, we'll clean up our tools and flush System Restore.

I tried to do this. MBAM installed fine, and the updates worked (had to download mbam-rules.exe file since I don't have an internet connection on that computer at work). When I clicked on the MBAM it said The database you are using is not supported by this version of Malewarebytes' Anti-Maleware. Download the latest version of this program. I decided to go to MBAM's site and download the newest version of everything I could find just to be sure. Downloaded the newest MBAM version (1.31) and the newest updater (version 1442), uninstalled the old program, and rebooted my computer. I noticed the computer has been having unusually long restart times, and when the computer loaded it gave a message that said something along the lines of "Windows could not find C:\Program". I reinstalled MBAM with the installers I had just downloaded, but got the same error message.

** Select to download the SLIM version.
** Because CCleaner removes everything in temp folders, if you have anything in a temp folder, back it up or move it to a permanent folder prior to running CCleaner.
** We will be cleaning cookies as well. Make a note of any passwords, etc. that you want to save. If you do not want to delete cookies, simply uncheck that option.
1. Before first use, select Options > Advanced and UNCHECK "Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours"
2. Then select the items you wish to clean up. In the Windows Tab:
3. Click the "Run Cleaner" button.
4. A pop up box will appear advising this process will permanently delete files from your system.
5. Click "OK" and it will scan and clean your system.
6. Click "exit" when done. REBOOT.

Windows did not say what program it was trying to open, it just said it could not access "C:\Program" and said if I was trying to load something to use the start menu, or something along those lines. Also, I'm not sure if this affected the program, but while SUPERAntiSpyware was running, McAfee On Access Scan found 31 files it said were infected and deleted them. Boot up still seemed sluggish. Run Disk Cleanup in each user's profile: Click "Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup" Please make sure only the following are checked:
-- Downloaded Program Files
-- Temporary Internet Files
-- Recycle Bin
-- Temporary Files
Click "OK" and Disk Cleanup will delete those files for you.
Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. It is possible that you may be running Java code in your applications that absolutely require a specific version of the JRE to run. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.
Close Add/Remove.
* In Windows Explorer, navigate to C:\Program Files\Java =this folder. Delete any subfolders.
* Do NOT delete C:\Program Files\ JavaVM =this folder, if found!
Official JAVA Installation Instructions if needed.
Please post a fresh HijackThis log and let me know how things are running. If the issue has been resolved, we'll remove ComboFix and flush System Restore. I suggest that you keep Super Anti-Spyware, though.

Computer seems to be running fine. Here's the log. Also, I was wondering, if I can get a working copy of MBAM, would that be better than the Super Anti-Spyware? Or should I have both?

To answer your question, I prefer MBAM. As long as you run one on demand having both SAS and MBAM is fine. I'm not sure why MBAM wouldn't run. There was a problem with McAfee and MBAM last month, but that was corrected, so as long as McAfee is updated, you should be able to run both.
I'll ask one of MBAM's developers to look at this thread. Maybe he can figure out what the problem was. I couldn't troubleshoot it at the time because of Dell's new forum software issues regarding posting, and we needed to get you cleaned up as soon as possible.
It's time for some housekeeping.
Because the tools we used to scan the computer, as well as tools to delete files and folders, are no longer needed, they should be removed, along with the folders created by these tools.
* Click Start then Run
* Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Notice the space between the X and the /u
This will uninstall ComboFix. It will also implement some cleanup procedures and reset System Restore points.
The following suggestions are general prevention and are not customized for your computer. You may have already taken some of these steps, and depending on your current security, you may not need to implement all of these:
1. Visit Microsoft Update: Make sure that you have all the Critical Updates recommended for your operating system and IE. The first defense against infection is a properly patched OS. Microsoft's widows Update: http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp
2. Please use a firewall and realtime anti-virus. Keep the anti-virus software and firewall software up to date. Note: Zone Alarm Firewall (by Checkpoint) has a free version http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/company/products/trial_zaFamily/trial_zaFamily.jsp?lid=home_freedownloads
3.You might consider installing Mozilla / Firefox.

4. Do not use file sharing. Even the safest P2P file sharing programs that do not contain bundled spyware, still expose you to risks because of the very nature of the P2P file sharing process. By default, most P2P file sharing programs are configured to automatically launch at startup. They are also configured to allow other P2P users on the same network open access to a shared directory on your computer. The reason for this is simple. File sharing relies on its members giving and gaining unfettered access to computers across the P2P network. However, this practice can make you vulnerable to data and identity theft. Even if you change those risky default settings to a safer configuration, the act of downloading files from an anonymous source greatly increases your exposure to infection. That is because the files you are downloading may actually contain a disguised threat. Many very malicious worms and trojans, such as the Storm Worm, target and spread across P2P files sharing networks because of their known vulnerabilities.
5. Before using or purchasing any Spyware/Malware protection/removal program, always check the following Rogue/Suspect Spyware Lists. http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm http://www.malwarebytes.org/database.php
6. If you have not already done so, you might want to install CCleaner and run it in each user's profile: http://www.ccleaner.com/ ** UNcheck the option to install the Yahoo toolbar that is checked by default for the Standard version, or download the toolbar-free versions (Slim or Basic) when given the option for those.
7. Practice Safe Surfing with with TrendProtect by Trend Micro. This is not compatible with Firefox 3.0 yet. TrendProtect is a browser plugin that assigns a safety rating to domains listed in your search engine. TrendProtect also adds a new button to your browser's toolbar area. The icon and color of the button changes to indicate whether the page currently open is safe, unsafe, trusted, or unrated, or whether it contains unwanted content. The following color codes are used by TrendProtect to indicate the safety of each site.
8. You might consider installing SpywareBlaster: http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
It will:
Prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted software.
Block spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox.
Restrict the actions of potentially unwanted sites in Internet Explorer.
