Attach an external monitor.  If it shows OK, the internal LCD should be replaced.  If it shows the same fault, the video chip is bad and the mainboard will need to be replaced.  Since the diagnostics didn't pick up a fault, chances are the LCD panel is the faulty part, but it's worth checking with an external display, since it is an expensive part to replace.

We did that previously and it looks crisp and clear so it appears to be the LCD monitor :(

Thank you, an external monitor works fine so I guess its the lcd screen on the laptop that needs to be replaced.

Peace, Thank you for your help.

Don't waste your money on a new LCD screen...  Cutting & pasting my previous reply on another thread...

I'm having the same problem with my XPS M1210.

I tried an external monitor and the picture is flawless.  Fearing it might be the LCD panel, I took my lappy apart and check the connections.  Connections were fine, so I took my wife's laptop (fortunately also an XPS M1210) also took it apart, and plugged my computer into her display screen.  Same problem with the garbled text & graphics.

So it's definitely not the screen itself since my wife's is fine.

This is the first problem I've ever had with this machine in well over 2 years.  I'm glad I had the wife's to play with and I didn't blow $150+ on a new screen.

Hi! I happen to have the same problem with my 2 years old XPS M1210 with NVidia GeForce 7400 graphic card ; the screen suddenly got blurry and started to flicker making the display difficult to read.  The problem is intermittent and does not show on an external LCD display.  Like the other users in here I have run run and succesfully passed all graphics test (Bios and others), checked the settings, run hardware scans and I am getting nowhere near diagnosing the root cause of this issue.

As this appear to be a recurring problem with this laptop, I would have thought somebody would have got the answer --- can anybody please help? I will also reach to Dell support and get their perpective on this.

I'm having similar issues along with error message regarding Logitech Quickcam.  Any luck getting help with this issue?

Thanks

Hello! My problem was resolved by replacing the motherboard and heat sink. My laptop was fortunately still under warranty and Dell did it free of charge on my premises. The M1210 is known for motherboards failures  and I was told that an extra year warranty would be added to my existing warranty to cover for the eventuality that the replacement motherboard (The 4th one my computer has now been fitted with --- a long story about fitting errors and possibly faulty components) goes faulty again.

Best Regards

I have the same problem.  I took my M1210 back to Dell for repairs last year.  The technician said he took the laptop apart and put it back together and the problem was solved.  Dell charged me over US$100 for this.  It worked for about 2 days and the same problem occurred again.

I have been putting up with this problem for another year and finally a few weeks ago the screen went blank.  That makes the laptop unusable.

This was a very expensive laptop and apparently this display problem is widespread and Dell did nothing about it.

Stay away from Dell laptops if you want to avoid headaches.  I am getting a Lenovo Thinkpad.

Neither Dell nor Lenovo makes its own notebooks - they're made under contract by the same suppliers.  If you're expecting Lenovo's hardware to be substantially different than Dell's, you're in for disappointment.

Got the 'watercolor' effect display problem three days ago.  Did the online troubleshoot, obviously to no effect - finally called Dell and  was told since my warranty has expired they wanted $50 just to talk to me.  I explained that this was obviously a product defect given the number of people who have this same issue and they didn't care.  Well - too bad - this was my 5th XPS or top line Dell in the last 9 years. I've loved them until now, but I'm not going to put up with this type of customer service.  Apple here I come.

Be sure you get a 3-year Applecare plan - and note that Apple charges for software support after 90 days, and won't extend a warranty beyond three years - so, if you're expecting the hardware and policies to be any different, you won't be happy.
