That's almost certainly a problem with the screen?

Did you pay for an extended warranty on it?

If you did, call tech support.  They'll hopefully arrange a technician visit?  If you didn't, I'm afraid you'll have to pay for a new screen yourself :emotion-6:

Thanks for your reply.

Yes, I have a 3 year on site warranty but I thought someone might come up with a fairly simple software adjustment.

Hi there,

what you can do is update the BIOS of the system from www.support.dell.com

- Click on Drivers and Downloads and then enter the system Service Tag to be routed to the Drivers and Downloads page. Once opened click on BIOS and then download the BIOS, save it on your Desktop screen.

- Attach the Adaptor to the laptop and make sure that the battery charge is above 10% and then run the BIOS update (as Administrator incase of Vista or as normal in XP).

- Once the BIOS is updated, the system will restart automatically and loads Desktop.

- Observe the Desktop screen and for a while if the same behavior continuous, if it does attach the External Monitor to laptop and check does it occur on the External Monitor also. Incase if it happens, probably the Motherboard need to be replaced.

- Also you can run PSA Diagnostics on laptop to isolate if LCD screen is bad. (Shut down the laptop and then hold the Fn key and Power button, leave Power button after 5 seconds and then Fn key after 3 seconds to start the diagnostics, once all the tests are completed it will ask for Extended Diagnostics and you can exit from that. Incase if it gives any error messages, make a note of them and contact Dell Tech Support for further proceeds.

Alternatives:

- Try reinstalling Dell Quick Utility

- Also reinstall Graphics Drivers (Use Revo Uninstaller - Use Advanced Mode to remove), once done update the drivers from Dell Support

As you have already stated that laptop has onsite warranty, they can send the tech to your place if any components need to replaced.
