Forgot to mention what happens when I try to do the Ctrl / F11 method.
It always gets me to the screen you normally get when you hit F8. I get the black screen that gives you the option of starting in safe mode (also safe mode with command prompt and safe mode with networking).
The XPS were among the last systems to get the quick restore - it's possible the M170 shipped without it. If so, you will have the Windows disc and will need to manually load the OS and drivers.
