You're asking for third-party software support, which no hardware manufacturer supplies with a standard service plan, so if you expect any different from any other vendor you'll be sorely disappointed.
You need to find out what codec you need to view the videos you want.
The videos are on a WD Elite portable drive, and they are not copy protected. (Many are tv recordings)
I don't doubt your product support statement but, as I said Dell's sales rep said they would play. I guess Dells sales people learned form the used car industry. And, if they keep that up, they'll end up in similar straits!
Not true. Dell will be glad to reconfigure my laptop and load the codec IF I pay their One Dell people their fee. When I bought this laptop I was assured the laptop would run MP4 videos, not that I'd have to pay them extra when it arrived. Feels like a bait & switch operation.
It'll depend on what you're using to play the videos. It may also depend on what videos you're playing - copy protected videos can't be played by many players without the digital rights key.
There's no way anyone promises compatibility with specific applications - if a salesperson told you that, they were exaggerating. I know your system warranty/terms of sale specifically disclaims compatibility with any specific piece of software - and yes, they will help you for fee - the same fee you'd pay if you bought a Sony, HP/Compaq, etc. system. NO ONE provides software support for free any longer.

THEY WILL PLAY! You will have to put the PLAYER PROGRAM in your computer.
Please think about what you are asking.
If you asked the sales rep will my computer do crossword puzzles, the rep will say YES, because the computer will do crosssord puzzles...
BUT YOU HAVE TO PUT THE PROGRAM IN THE COMPUTER FIRST!
The computer WILL play MP4 videos, there's NOTHING WRONG with it. What you need is a software program that will play your videos.
Just like if you asked the salesman wil this computer do Excel spreadsheets.. the answer is yes, but if you don't have the software, then it won't.
Use your head, you just purchased a high dollar computer. Do some research on the internet and quit blaming Dell for something that isn't their fault.
You don't read well, do you? The sales people gave me the impression it would work, out of the box. It will not and, according to them, needs more than software (and according to them, additional costs paid to Dell) So, I am trying to learn how to accomplish that.
Do you know the software and configurations I need or do you not?
Uhh, I know exactly what I am saying. Do you know what you are writing? I asked for help in my first post while explaining how II came to the position I am in.
Now, please explain how your posts have been helpful towards a solution.
Do you know of a "player program" to solve the problem or will you simply continue posting unhelpful rhetoric? I have two, as you call them "player programs", on the system yet neither will play the videos.
P.S. No a computer will not DO crossword puzzles regardless of the software program you put on. AI is not that sophisticated.

They are MP4's, what codec applies?

Okay, thanks for all the help! I figured it out.
Problem solved with the simple download of two popular free programs!
