Hello, and thanks for the information.

But I have a problem, because I have win xp64 and can't find some drivers (audio for example).

Where can I find it?

Thank you

I subsequently had some problems with Bluetooth - I had used Dells R196560 driver which seemed to be OK but after using it with my mobile the system started to BSOD on startup. It required restoration of a ghost image to fix as neither "safe mode" nor "last good..." worked. I uninstalled all the R196560 stuff and found R216460 which flashes the bluetooth firmware and installs more recent software. This appears to be more stable and I havent been able to reproduce the BSOD again.

Can you provide a link for the Bluetooth driver you're talking about so the people reading this can set it up as you have?

This won't work under xp64.  You'd have to find all new drivers for everything.

Ok, new replies to this should be made here, as it is more complete :

Its on the Dell support website - just do a search for R216460.

Ok, since you're too lazy to post the link, allow me :

http://support.us.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen

&releaseid=R216460&formatcnt=1&libid=0&fileid=307412

Or :

http://ftp.dell.com/network/R216460.exe

The 1640 has a number of applications installed which dont come on the supplied CDs and so cannot easily be reinstalled. One of these, the Dell Webcam software (not the drivers), can be installed using R195284. This lists as a 32-bit Vista application but works well under XP. Its in the app directory of the dell ftp site (ftp.dell.com) or do a search. I am sure the ever helpful and polite NinjaRunningWild will post properly formatted links.

The facial recognition software seems to be incompatible with XP. I havent found a way of installing the Dell Cyberlink PowerDVD or Dell Datasafe.

Your sarcasm knows no bounds...

Dell Webcam :

Now, Archway1.  Can you *please* post your A06 bios to rapidshare and post the link here?  Since this enables basic functionality (the ability to use the CD Eject button on the top strip), this is important to everyone here.

Edit :

Thanks for your (and everyone else's) contribution to this forum.  I am lining up all the drivers to install XP 32bit.

Do you have the Dell Wireless 370 Card (2.0 + EDR)?

Have you had any subsequent BSOD either in XP 32bit or Vista 64bit?

Did flashing the firmware create any problems?

Do you know the original Bluetooth driver file number that came with your XPS 16?  I am unable to track mine down from the "utilities disk" ( dated Nov 2008) that came with my Aug 2009 delivery.

Thanks in advance for your response.

Have you had any subsequent BSOD either in XP 32bit or Vista 64bit? Not with XP 32-bit; I dont have Vista but Win 7 64-bit is OK too (although not used it much)

Did flashing the firmware create any problems? No

Just as an additional point I had another go at the ITECIR. I found a Lenovo driver here http://consumersupport.lenovo.com/en/DriversDownloads/drivers_show_710.html which installs well. However, neither this or any other driver I have tried causes the Dell Travel Remote to do anything in XP (but works well in Win7 so its not the hardware). Reading more, I can find no mention of the Dell Travel Remote working with XP and I have a suspicion that there is no functionality for this device in Windows XP (as opposed to the Media Centre where it might work). Does anyone KNOW better?

Hey Archway, do you mind posting that bios?

The deal with the device driver (ITECIR) could be due to any number of things.  The most likely explanation is that Vista has natural device driver support for that device, as it sounds like the software is only for the functionality on the OS, not in the OS, follow?  So IE - It's software to work with it but not the device driver itself.  A pertinent question is whether or not it shows up as an additional device under the device manager.

No additional BSoD's to answer your question.

Whoa!! Sorry.  Let me post this again without all of the HTML code:

On the home stretch getting XP to run effectively on XPS 16.  I want to thank Archway and NinjaRunningWild for all of their work and contributions.  I found their info very valuable.

I currently have not loaded the IR driver because of the apparent uncertainty over whether it will work.  Has anyone obtained stable drivers for this function?  Otherwise, I installed all of the modifications, fixes, drivers etc.  In addition to what has been posted here, I used the synaptics driver for the touchpad and the problem with the touchpad interfering with typing by resetting the cursor because of thumb or palm brushes is solved.  The Synaptics driver has a sensitivity setting which is very useful.  That driver is at :

http://www.synaptics.com/support/drivers  Most current 32 bit XP driver (Synaptics_Driver_v10_1_8_XP32.exe).

I currently have a few residual problems.  There are two unknown devices in device manager.  They are for "Intel(R) ICH9M LPC Interface Controller - 2919".  I did go to Intel's driver site and download and installed the chipset driver from:

http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&ProdId=2115&DwnldID=18052&lang=eng

The other driver is for "Microsoft ACPI-Compliant System".  I think this is linked to one of my problems.  On shut down I can not select hibernate.  There is no functionality and pressing the shift key does nothing.  Anyone have any ideas?  I reinstalled the chipset drivers twice and nothing changed.

The other major issue is no functionality for the CD eject button on the lighted touch sensitive toolbar.   Has anyone found the solution for this problem?
