Replaced Hard drive, Inspiron 1501, now what?

Ok, so my laptop stopped booting up before Windows last week, did the diagnostics and determined my hard drive had failed. Purchased a new hard drive through Dell. Installed it, tried to reinstall Windows xp, and PC crashed before it was sucessful. Have since tried to reinstall, and it went all the way through, but it is still saying "OS not found", yet if I try to reinstall, it says "OS already installed"..ran diagnostics to make sure I didnt blow the new hard drive, and it was ok..what do I do next?..also Laptop is really starting to overheat lately, fan test passed fine, anything I can do with this as well..thanks for any info I can get..

Welcome to the forums :emotion-21:

Did you reformat the new hard drive, before trying to install the OS for the first time?

And it sounds like you're not reformatting the hard drive before reinstalling the OS on subsequent attempts - which is why you're getting the "OS already installed".

Unless you're doing a 'Repair' install (which you're not), you should always (quick-) format the drive first, before starting the OS installation :emotion-55:

Re the heat:  Other than making sure there's air getting in underneath the laptop, and that the rear of the laptop (where the warm air is exhausted) is also clear, using a laptop cooler is really the only other way of helping keep temperatures down.
