If you are simply looking for an External eSata drive, Seagate has a number of them available that all come with the required eSata cable.  You can find them on their website under Xtreme external drives.

No I am not. KEY WORDS: Power OVER eSATA. Requires a special cable and special enclosure.

Otherwise you have to have two cables.

the specs what ever they may be are in the user manul.

As far as I know the ESATA port is not self powering and you would need a powered enclosure to run the drive.

sorry that no one knows what your talking about:emotion-1:
I have your comp too, and am looking for a similar solution now.
Looks like we are STILL waiting for the cables. Even something that would fork to USB and eSata on the drive side (only one port on the laptop).

Somehow in this wonderful world of globalization, it is impossible to find such a thing distributed in the US.  Nor will I pay, $40 plus international shipping for this one.  Thanks though, at least I know it exists.

and for the enclosure:

i have the studio 16 and i was peeved when i discovered my eSATA external drive needed ac power. after some serious searching i found the elusive cable from a Taiwan on ebay. as i can tell, you have to buy it with a card, but it should work. http://cgi.ebay.com/Power-Over-eSATA-PCI-e-ExpressCard-Card-2-5-3-5-HDD-A_W0QQitemZ150371723775QQcmdZViewItemQQptZAU_Input_Peripherals?hash=item2302da69ff&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14

if you message the seller he will probably list the cable alone.

yes, that eSATA/USB port can be "power over eSATA" or it can be only USB or only eSATA.

I just got my Studio XPS 16 and I tried it with a Delock 42465 external 2.5" enclosure. They work together nicely without any setup whatsoever. You get a power-over-eSATA cable with this enclosure.

To make things simple, here is a website where you can purchase a "power over eSATA" cable. Personally, I am planning on purchasing a Lacie Rugged External Drive (eitehr a 500 GB or 1 TB) which already includes the the cable but also gives me the option of using the USB port.

In fact, any eSATA cables needed should be found on this website:

Thanks for the update.  The Lacie Rugged didn't have Powere eSATA on earlier models (would have needed a Y-adapter, powered eSATA to USB+eSATA).  Premium price point comes with the new convince though.

I agree... do you have an alternative suggestion for a eSATA of similar quality?
