Hi. It sounds like the settings in the BIOS have changed. I've ran into this same problem a few times last month on a few customer's laptops. The power settings for the monitor had been changed to a very low power consumption when using the AC adapter. Press F2 when the computer starts up to get into BIOS. Just be careful in there. Hope it's that easy for you. Good luck.

Assuming there's an image on an external monitor, the backlight or inverter needs repair.
