I'm having a similar problem actually. It appears out of nowhere. I've noticed that it also shows no link light either. It's as though the BIOS has shut the device off. If you power off the computer (and remove power for a short time), it then will work fine. It's definitely in the hardware.
Go to the properties of the network connection under "Network Connections". Click "Configure" to the right of the "Connect Using" option. Go to the "Power Management" tab and uncheck "All the computer to turn off this device to save power".
Only time will tell if this is the problem but it makes sense. I'm also going to look in the BIOS to see if there is a similar option.
Even restart won't reslove the problem, I tried to remove the power cable and wait the green light goes off and plug it back in again then it works. Thanks for letting me know this!
Is this a bug in Dell system? Maybe we should make a conplain!
I want to mark this as answer to my question but I think "unsolved" will bring more attention and maybe some Dell people will take a look at into this issue.
I'm not sure if it's a bug or not. The option exists on non Vostro computers as well. The bug, however, might be that it doesn't re-activate. But for all I know it's a problem with SP3, not with the hardware. My old Dimension 4550 started doing the same thing (except that it didn't stay disconnected). Now that I think about it, it might have been when I applied SP3. Who knows.
I don't think it's a problem with SP3, I have a lot of PCs running SP3, yes other Dell models, they are all fine, just this new one I bought has this problem.
I just got it. I'll probably swap it tomorrow or Saturday. Since the problem only occured a couple times a week, I'll need to give it a week or two to say for sure if it helped.
First, the power management method will partly solve this problem, after un-check the box, the cable unplugged error will occasionally appear and will disappear right away, you won't even notice this if you are just browsing, but the download software will be interrupted. So I decided to contact Dell and they send a technician here last week to replace the mainboard. Now I'm on the new board for a week and I can tell you the problem is still there.
Confirmed. I just had the problem with the replacement board. Interesting thing this time though was that I didn't lose my link light. I just couldn't talk on the wire. The power management option didn't make a difference for me though. Once it dropped...it took a power off to recover.
I'm going to call them today and "allow" them to send me a network card. I spend all day in VPN and Skype which makes this problem a major interuption.

i've already asked this. as this is a business pc and critical to be operational. they tell me they only replace like for like... i'm awaiting to hear from a supervisor but i want them to replace the whole pc... if they know this is an issue they should not be selling this model anymore until there is a fix, or just send people network cards.

i bought 11 of these pc's for my office and we've had to replace motherboards 3 times...
i will try the suggestion of the power management option and see how it goes.. but right now losing the network connection is really bad...

Sadly, this did not help. I guess I'll be calling Dell about it.

They are sending me a "new" system board. They did say that it was a known problem. So if you are out of warranty, might still be worth a call.
