If the battery is over say 1 year old it's shot. Under a year and you may get a warranty replacement if it's covered with your unit. I would get a new one since they run about $70-100 to keep from damaging the charging circuits. I see this alot when the battery has bad cells and hey, its a consumable item.
Yes, my laptop is over one year old (exactly 1½year old) and warranty is not applicable. I will buy a new battery and I assume that charger circuit on system board is OK.
