'Wiping down' a cartridge can cause it to fail, depending on what you mean by that. Cartridges have sensitive electronic parts that you should not touch. Check your ink level utility to see if the black ink is still registering. Also don't know what you mean by "changing the ink." It should mean changing the whole cartridge.

Rick I have seen where other people have had the same problem and you give them the same answer you have given me. YES I AM USING SERIES 9 CARTRIDGES. I have change the cartridges more than once. I will print red text or other color text and pictures but IT WILL NOT PRINT BLACK. I have done all of the maintence for this. It also says there is an alignment problem.

medusasmomma,

Unplug the printer from the wall. Now remove the power brick from the back of the printer for 60 seconds, this will reset any error messages the printer is getting. Plug the printer back in. Power the printer back on. open the printer and take out the Black Dell Series 9 ink cartridge and make sure all the tape is off of it. Put the ink cartridge back in and make sure it's seated correctly. Do the same for the color cartridge. When you close the printer, your printer will print an alignment page. Any error messages?

Black cratridge = Black sid(left side)          Color cartridge = Color side(right side)

Photo Cartridge = Black side(Left side)     Color cartridge = Color side(right side)

Try start, control panel, printers, click on your printer, printer preferences, advanced more options. Make sure the complete a print boxes are unchecked.

Are you trying to print something using Microsoft Word, by chance?

Hello,

I have tried all these things and my Dell 926 printer is still not printing black and is still giving a cartridge alignment error.  Has anyone figured this out? I thought cleaning it might help, as it seems perhaps some ink may have splashed onto a sensor somewhere to block the alignment process, thereby blocking the black ink from flowing properly. However, I don't know where to begin cleaning. Also, when I print the test page it prints out a perfectly healthy set of black lines at the top of the page, just to let me know it can still print black (just not for me).  Since this happened the 926 has since decided to print black ink once for one test page, only to stop shortly after.

Please help if you can!

Rick,

Thanks for trying, but I cannot get the printer to work.  I am using Dell series 9 cartridges, and yes I did refill them because I believe the ink and toner industry to be a bunch of thieves.  I guess I will give in and buy the new catridges, this time.

 ginnydare,

Sometimes refilling them works, sometimes it doesn't. Buying a generic cartridge, some work and some don't, it's hit an miss, if you want to try them, it's up to you. It seems the printer manufacturers, not just Dell, have installed sensors in the ink cartridges, so you have to use their ink cartridges.

Any other suggestions? I have new Dell Series 9 cartridges, I've unplugged and waited, the alignment page prints only black and red, but the same error appears.

It says to troubleshoot, how do I do that?
