inspiron 5150 hard drive

Question

my computer makes humming noises , like a fan running,  all the time..i thought it was the fan but someone said that it is probably my hard drive going bad. How can I tell if it it the hard drive?

It's more likely a dying fan, but to test the hard drive, press F12 at powerup, boot to the Dell diagnostics, and run the extended test on the drive.

My F12 didn't bring up anything. Is there another way?

Remove the hard drive and power on the system.  Wait for the fan to come on - if the noise is gone, it's the drive.  If it's not, it's the fan.

thanks..that is what I am going to do..I'm sure it is the fan..it gets so hot.
