It's more likely a dying fan, but to test the hard drive, press F12 at powerup, boot to the Dell diagnostics, and run the extended test on the drive.

My F12 didn't bring up anything. Is there another way?

Remove the hard drive and power on the system. Wait for the fan to come on - if the noise is gone, it's the drive. If it's not, it's the fan.
thanks..that is what I am going to do..I'm sure it is the fan..it gets so hot.
