XPS-400 Motherboard Trouble

Son's XPS 400, 2 years old, Blue screen with 0x0000008E KERNEL_MODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED. Lot of dirt and dust inside, CPU fan noisy.  Cleaned everything, ran Memory diagostic, DIMM 1 failed tests. Swapped memory sticks, reran test, DIMM 1 still failed. I conclude MB is toast.  Correct?
Seems new MB costs as much as a new computer.  Can I put memory in DIMM 3 & 4 only?  Is there some other way to use the existing MB? Alternatively what would be worth re-using if anything, or is buying a new computer the best option?

Yes, you should be able to install the memory in DIMM 3 & 4 and the system will still work.

I installed the memory in DIMM 3 & 4, ran memory diagnostic, got errors for DIMM 3 no matter which stick was installed.  Put one stick in DIMM 4, ran diagnostic, passed green on all tests.  I am now running the machine with one stick in DIMM 4.

What would this indicate?  Both DIMM 1 & 3 evidently have issues?  What is common element on motherboard whose failure would impact DIMM 1 and 3 but not 2 & 4?

Sorry, Dell does not accept trades, for a replacement motherboard, try calling Dell Spare Parts HERE.

Note: Dell replacement parts are marked 'Refurbished' and have only a 90 day warranty.
