I'm having this same issue except my version is 7.2.101.216
Upon reboot the speed default to the middle of the setting range. It especially drives me nuts on my 1920x1200 screen as it takes a couple finger swipes to get across the screen at lower speeds.
Interesting. I have reinstalled Dell Touchpad V12.0.1 after trying 11.xx.x.x with support on the phone with no resolution to my issue. Just a loss of the touchpad magnification parts of V12.0.1.
I am able to select and delete text with the touchpad in both notepad and MS Office Word 2007 docs.
Very Interesting. No solution has been forwarded to me by Dell to date. Hope it comes sooner than later.
Ahhhh, Interesting again. I have disabled the tap function so delete worked straight away for me. I alwaws have trouble when I have tap enabled so its SOP for me to disable it. Crazy code writers.
When do we get an answer for the speed setting problem though. Dell? Synaptics? Where are you?
I just got off the phone with Dell MyTech service for a couple of issues. This touchpad issue was thoroughly beat to death. I was getting the email address for software support when the tech (Rory) on the phone found a document burried in the KB. I knew this trouble had existed since day one with this computer. As it turns out, in the same session that I initiallized my computer, I installed a Logitech VX revolution with the software suite that it came with. In the Logitech Set Point application accessed from the Control Panel > Mouse app, There was a radio button choice for Speed and Acceleration to be 1=Setpoint Implementation or 2=OS Implementation.
Once this was set to OS Implementation everything worked as it should and the speed setting held after reboot. I have a screen shot jpg but this forum wouldn't let me upload it.
Thanks for the update Bud! I purchased a Dell Bluetooth Mouse and installed the Set Point software. By the way, the mouse is also made by Logitech. I will check and see if this works for me too.
Glad this fixed your touchpad settings too! This really was an anoying thing about an otherwise great computer.
At first Rory wanted to install the 11.x.x.x. driver again and when I resisted then he suggested we reimage the computer. I felt neither of these were going to be the ultimate answer and mentioned that a reimage was like using a bazooka to kill a fly. He agreed and said it may just be something that I have to live with. After I said that this wasn't the answer we were looking for, he agreed and really dug into the issue. That's when he found the KB article and ultimately the fix for the problem. The process for this and a wireless printer issue took right at an hour on the phone with the printer taking 10 minutes or less.
Sometimes it pays to be persistant and paitent about needing a fix and motivating your tech agent in a very patient and PC way to dig a little deeper. I'm not sure if the answer would have come if I hadn't signed up for the MyTech service or not but I think it helped for sure in this case.
I just got my Studio XPS 2 weeks ago and had the same annoying problem with the speed. I just got off about 90 minutes on the phone with Dell where the support tech removed and then re-installed the touchpad drivers and now wanted to do some other equally useless thing.
Well, I also have a Logitech VX Laser mouse, and while I was waiting for the tech to waste more of my time, I stumbled across this thread. Of course, this fixed it and I actually had to read it to the tech so that he understood what the fix was. After I reset to OS implementation, of course the problem was FIXED!!!
What's hilarious is that the tech says he's glad Dell could fix my problem. No. Dell did not fix my problem. I fixed my own problem by finding your answer here.

Bud - thanks for your email.
I am using v 12.0.1 and just figured out what I did wrong.
You have to tap the touchpad after you select the text, then the DELETE key works!

I have not tested your issues. However, I have found another problem and that is you cannot delete text that you select with the touchpad.

Offroadie and notyourown,
A solution was found in my case. Yippeee!

Hope this information helps someone out there.

Yep, this fixed it for me too. I changed the check mark from Set Point to OS and now my touchpad keeps it's settings.
Thanks again for the help!

Bud,
You are absolutely my hero, at least for today.
