Yes, it runs ok without battery, just on power adapter. But I cannot believe the battery suddenly behaves like this - it could run hours for 14 months, and now it doens't even hold 5 seconds, when I unplug from power adapter. But it runs well if I start laptop just on battery without power adapter. Is the battery 100% dead?

Several possibilities--your battery could be failing since they usually last about 2-3 years. Your motherboard could have a problem with where the adapter plugs in. To test the this, remove the battery and leave it out and run with just the adapter. If it runs OK with the battery out, replace the battery or leave it out and always use the adapter.

Did you ever find a solution to this problem (short of buying a new battery)?  Mine used to work for 2-3 hours, and now it fails during boot-up.

I've had my XPS 1530 since February 2008.

No. I already forgot that problem. Just using my 6 cell battery. I will look for a reason again if this one fails as my old 9 cell one :). Good luck.
