t9924jp,

Since the printer is functioning correctly, then the drivers are NOT installed correctly. Please follow the instructions carefully and the printer should install for you. Let me know what happens.

First make sure your computer has all the Windows updates. I have the custom ones too, especially the .net framework(Needed to run many applications). Also make sure to have the latest Java. Since you didn't mention how the printer's connected, here the basic instructions for this printer.

Disconnect your printer.

Download and run this patch (for 924 printer)to completely remove the printer from your computer. Run the patch(a MUST on Vista machines) until it prompts you to restart your computer.

Restart your computer.

Download the proper drivers.

ALL THESE DRIVERS WERE FOR THE 924 PRINTER

XP Drivers

Vista 32-bit Drivers

Vista 64-bit Drivers.

All other drivers

Install the proper drivers.(ONLY install the drivers you need) You'll be prompted when to connect your printer(powered on)

As for scanning, if you have the disk that came with the printer, then insert the Printer disk and stop it from running. Go to My Computer and double click on it. Look for the drive with the Dell disk in it. Right click on it, left click explore. Look for the OCR Folder. In the OCR Folder, there is an Abbyy Folder. right click on setup.exe, that's in the Abbyy Folder and left click run as administrator. This will install the OCR program.

Scanning

Scanning using USB connection, open the Dell All-In-One Center, click on scanning and copying and scan from there.

Scanning wirelessly, use the scan buttons on the printer.

One last thing...my printer is connected via usb.....I mentioned (in case this matters) that I can scan via the all in one center window, and the printer/scanner reacts properly.  I also downloaded the Vista version of the driver from the Dell Download site yesterday.   Should I still start the process you described?   Thanks for the prompt  help, by the way, as I am a true neophyte when it comes to pc issues.

t9924jp,

Yes, follow my procedure but before you do, click start, control panel, system and make sure you have 32-bit or 64-bit operating system for the proper drivers.

Thanks.   I restarted the pc last night, but when I attempted to log back on to my user profile,  all I saw was a blank dark blue screen.  I had to use task manager to shut down for the night.   I will attempt again and follow your suggestions this evening.  I will advise this evening.

I have now downloaded (per your link) the Dell 924 dirver, even though I have the Dell 942  printer (is this an issue?),  and followed instructions on the Download site to the point of item 6: Start & Run...when I click on the start, there is no "Run" visible to me in Vista ( am I missing something obvious?), and when I double click on the icon on my desktop, I am offered a list of items within this folder, including install and setup.  When clicking on either of these, the next window mentions a firewall exceiption ( I use Windows One care and have disabled the firewall)  I now have opened a window telling me to connect my printer ( and I did, power on, usb plugged in both ends) , but the "Next" button is underintesified and unavailable.  Now what?

Ok, Rick,  all is well.   After my last reply ( I realize that I replied numerous times).   I went ahead and searched for the driver for my 942 printer using the service tag and downloaded it.   That  driver took me all of the way through, recognizing my printer was plugged in (albeit in one of the front usb ports), and printed a test page.  All was good, and I opened the All-in-one Center and ordered a scan of a document on the glass, and saw the preview just fine.   I had been this far before, when I first posted.  The original problem was when I ordered a print of a tax document from my tax program, and all that I got was a note in the print queue that the document had printed, but the printer never really reacted and printed.   Alli s working now.  Is there a reason that the printer did not react properly yesterday, when I believe that I have jsut repeated that which I did on Saturday, but with the result above (scanning, but no printing of documents, only test)?

Also,  if iI am scanning OK, do I need to follow your OSB recommendation?  And, finally, what are the backup disks you mention?

Thank you for all of your patience and enlightenment.

Cheers,

Jeff

Jeff,

I am so sorry about posting the wrong drivers. I must slow down when I type, my fingers can't spell correctly.

You have everything working, that's the important part. The patch should have worked, either. I would only worry about the OCR program, only if you want to scan to Word, Works, Open Office, etc..., something that needs to recognize each character.
