You have to connect audio cables in addition to hdmi. Computer to tv's PC input requires audio cables, unlike other hdmi connections. The computer does not sendthe sound through the hdmi (dvi) cable. You have to connect your sound card to the tv via cables. Directions are in the Samsung manual.

When you are connected, have you switched sound playback to HDMI? Right click on the speaker icon and choose 'Playback Devices' and select HDMI.

Some people have reported that they need to connect  the computer to the monitor (with the appropriate settings), then reboot to get HDMI to work correctly.

If the original poster is still around, did you ever get a real answer to this?

I'm on my second Studio 1555 that won't play audio over HDMI despite hours with tech support.

Kludging around it won't work, my display is smart enough to know that the HDMI spec always includes audio, so it won't let me use a separate audio input cable.

You are wrong, HDMI does support Video and Audio.

What Mary G wrote was

"The computer does not sendthe sound through the hdmi (dvi) cable"

so I guess she she has an older model that only has a DVI port. On those models one can use a DVI-to-HDMI adapter for video but it won't carry audio because DVI does not transmit audio. She needs to update her information about the models with dedicated HDMI  which does carry audio as you said.
