You might be looking at a hard drive failure--a very common occurrence and the main reasonfor backups. If you have XP, boot to your windows disk and run the Recovery Console to see if the errors can be repaired. Instructions Here:
Mount the hard drive in a 2.5" SATA USB 2.0 case, and attach it to a working system to recover your files. Then return it to the system and run the Dell diagnostics (F12 at powerup), which will confirm the failure.

Thank you for your advice but I have Vista on my lap top can the same thing be done with Vista?

Have you figured out how to fix it, I'm havingthe same problems..
