Dell 8600 : Laptop cannot detect new Hard Drive

Question

My original HDD failed on me so I went and bought a new 160GB IDE HDD (Samsung)   When I swapped ut the HDD it does not recognise that the new HDD exists - I have tried installing Samsung's own tool to 'Auto Detect' the drive but nothing and I have searched and searched the web! Solutions tried: Updated my BIOS to latest version Installed Samsung's HDD utility using a Bootable USB stick Tried the Hard Drive in another Dell Machine (D510)   Is there anything else I can try before I give in and try and return my HDD to the store?

Thanks for the reply - I had moved the adapter across form the old drive but no joy!

Make sure you transferred the black blade adapter from the back of the original drive to the pins of the new drive. If you did not, the drive is not connected to the system board, which is why you aren't seeing it.

The BIOS should see a 137 G drive - if it doesn't, the drive is faulty;  have Samsung or your vendor replace it.

Thanks ejn63 I thought this might be the case but had no way of checking it - will contact the store tomorrow and try and get this replaced.   thanks Buck_68
