Win 7 upgrade notification

I purchased a laptop in August.  I registered with Dell for the free upgrade.  Since Win 7 has been released now, how long will it be before I receive the notification that I can get my upgrade?

I just cannot believe how hard it is to work with Dell for an Win7 upgrade. I bought one Dell in August, after 5 times contacting Dell, finally I have an Order Number, and the shipping is estimated to be December.   Total time I spend to get to this point is more than 5 hours.  Not just the time, I got so humiliated when talking to one Dell customer rep, he was insisting that I am using Window XP, not Vista, so I was not eligible for Dell Win7 free upgrade, etc. etc.

In October, I bought another PC from Ayer, I spent 5 minutes to sign up for the upgrade, I got the upgrade DVD in early November and I am already using the Win7 now.

slitheen....

You not think you can install W7 on another machine then? I had hoped to install it on my non dell laptop, can you not input the service tag from your dell machine during the installation?

Hi everyone, first post here.

I ordered a Studio XPS on June 27th, the day after the Dell Windows 7 Update Program was announced. After many, MANY delays, and having to reorder twice, i finally received my laptop on August 20th (!!!).

I immediately registered for the update program, and placed my order on October 22nd, on the very first day.

I am still waiting on my order, of course, nor do i have any estimated shipping date. I called Dell twice, and every week they tell me to call back the next week.

As of right now, november 16th, 5PM, i still do not have any information on my order. However, my neighbour ordered his windows 7 a day after i did, on october 23rd, and he received his order last week. BEFORE ME !! Doesn't Dell respect the first orders?!

No Dell employee seems to be able to give me ANY information on my order. Will I be receiving it before christmas?!

Needless to say, i will never be buying from Dell again, and I will make sure anyone I know doesn't also.

However, can anyone here help? Did everyone finally get their Windows 7?

Thanks a lot

Doesn't Dell respect  the first orders

No - I still haven't got mine, having ordered on the 21st, even before you. The estimated shipping date is now blank and has already changed twice, I am getting nothing from Customer service. This seems a shambles.

My estimated shipping date, having ordered on 22nd October, was 15th November (this was the 3rd estimated date I've had), since then it has changed to show plain and simple 'ordered'.

From previous postings in this thread, it could have meant it had been processed as it apparently takes a couple of days to update the online system. However, I belive I should by now have received e-mails with tracking information, which I have not.

It just gets worse :emotion-12:

As fas as I'm aware, the Dell OEM operating system discs have always been good for one Dell machine at a time, if not even for a specific Dell machine. Since XP, OEM Windows discs take a snapshot of the hardware config of the machine it is installed upon for the first time....mainly the motherboard and hard discs. It will allow for a couple of key hardware changes before the software gets suspicious that it is actually a different machine - but if the hardware config changes drastically, or certainly the motherboard changes, it will not let you install again. At this point, the customer usually phones up Microsoft and tells them they simply had hardware failures and had to replace these components, and the person on the phone will unlock it for use again...on *that* particular machine.

However, this has only been what I've been told.....I've never actually tried putting on a Dell OS to another brand machine, let alone another Dell, but I have heard this from the kind of people who know their stuff, so I'd be surprised if it wasn't true.

Have you had a debit on your card yet? I have the same situation as you and have tried to contact Dell, but all I get is an automated response with my question in it and no answer. It seems as if the upgrades are being shipped in a very unfair manner, as people who ordered way after us seem to have already got theirs. Have you had any emails from Dell at all, as I have had nothing.

Just to update ............ My DVD is being shipped today :emotion-1:

Fingers crossed it arrives within a week, and in one piece.

I need a drink to celebrate :emotion-22:

There IS still hope, fellow early orderers.

Update: I have a tracking number, which now shows on UPS tracking system,

Registered when I received my new Sell ... got the email from Dell same day, received Win 7 upgrade kit about 1.5 weeks.

My issues is that when I upgraded to Win 7, it wiped out my McAfee software (which was a free 15 month activation).  I can find NOTHING on how to get the software and 15 month subscription back!??   Anyone?

Thanks in advance!

Ok, Time for a rant

Arggghhh, well the shipment date came and went and then the shipment date vanishes, that was last week. I have sent four emails to dell and keep getting the same old useless automated reply.

"Thank you for contacting the Dell™ | Windows® 7 Option Upgrade Customer Care Team.

Due to the overwhelming response for the WIN7 program, the orders are being sent on a first come first serve basis.
The approximate delivery time frame currently is 2-4 weeks, which will keep changing based on their location and availability.
When the item ships, an email will be sent to the end user providing them their shipment information.

Kind regards,

Dell™ | Windows® 7 Option Upgrade Customer Care Team"

I know this email is a lie. A colleage bought a dell desktop and registered for his upgrage two weeks after I did. He recieved his upgrade a week ago. I have come to the conclusion that dell are totaly useless. My studio 15 came with migrane inducing screen flicker.  This took hours on the phone, loads of emails (which remained unanswered for days) and two engeneers visits to fix. It took them from the 14th of September untill the 9th of november to fix that one, and they wanted me to pay for the privelage. Now this! I wonder how many return customers dell gets? if my experiance is anything to go by, not many!

Rant over, Ill go back to beating my head against a brick wall, it will proberbly be more usefull than emailing dell about my upgrade.

Funny (true) story :

My neighbour, who ordered a day after I did, received his Windows 7 last week. However, he just received today ANOTHER copy !!! How is this possible, when we are all still waiting?! I still can't believe it...

And, after reading about the OEM, I wonder.... wouldn't it be possible for me to use one of his Windows 7 upgrades?

Also, is it possible that the laptop or desktop order which permitted the update program defines the delay? My order was a Studio XPS 13, for which I waited 2 months, and now I am still waiting for my Windows 7. However, my neighbour ordered a Studio 14z, received his laptop in two weeks, a got his Windows 7 in 2 weeks. Is this possible? What was your computer order in the first place?

Btw, Still no estimated shipping date... DELL-Jesse L, can you help us, or give us any information on these anomalies?

I guess if we didn't laugh, we'd be crying in these frustrating situations.  I'm guessing it's a "no go" on upgrading to Win 7 with some one else' kit, but I could be wrong (So why didn't he just say "I don't know?") ... good question.

I hate that others are having difficulties, however, In any event, as I have had good experiences with Dell (this is my third Dell, a Studio XPS 9000) I have nothing but good things to say!

Best wishes all ...

I now have a new estimated shipping date - 27th November!  So ordered on 21st October and now 5 weeks estimate. What are the chances of this date disappearing again and being put even further back. This is becoming laughable from a major corporation.

I ordered on the 22nd October, and my original shipping date was 29th October. Then it changed to the 11th November I think, and now it has changed to the 27th of November. This is getting ridiculous. I paid the £15 for my 'free' copy of Windows 7, and I didn't expect to be jerked around like this by a major company.

edit: Just got an email saying it's been shipped. It's taken a month, which is far too long, but at least it has been done.
