Firewire on inspiron 86000 is not working.

Question

Hello to everybody. my name is gustav. I am german and I am using DELL Inspiron Notebooks for years. I have used an 8000 and an 8100. With the ispiron 8100 I used an icedisk with the firewire interface. I worked pretty well, fast and no problems. No I bough an Ispiron 8600 I love, but firewire does not work. I have both notebooks the 8100 and he 8600 standing together with the icedisk on the table. When I plug the firewire cabke into the 8100 the harddrive is detected , when I plug the cable to the 8600 nothinh happens!! To mak eit clear, it is not an cable problem. I know he difference between 4 and 6 pins. The harddrive has its own power suppls and again it works with the inspiron 8100 perfect!!!!!! Today I received an new 8600 from Dell. Now I have 2 8600 and one 8100 standing on my tabel. (Michael will love it) But both 8600 do not detect the harddrive via the firewire cable. Does anybody know waht to do. I need the firewire disk and I dont waht to give back the Inspiron 8600. The Dell service people cannot help me. The second 8600 has the same problem. I think he firewire does not work in the 8600 in general!!! Looking forward for a lot of messages.   Thanks   Rolf

Within Windows and in Device Manager, do you have a catagory called "IEEE 1394 Bus Host controllers" that has a Plus sign next to it?

That is the Firewire controller... if it's not listed then there's something going on.

Having some problems as well with an external DVD writer that worked flawlessly on a 8200. It sees the device, but on a reboot it does not. Un-re pluging it does not help.

8600 - problems are mounting...

Hi,

yes the firewire controller is in the hardware device manager. I have tried to deinstalling it and after booting windows xp has installed it new.

But that does not solve the problem.

Is anybody running the i8600 under win 2K? Perhaps it is an XP problem.

hi same thing happened with my brother's I8500 when he was trying to get some songs off my Westernd Digital HDD, but since i had already formatted the hdd on my i8200, the i 8500 didn't even pick up it was there, yet i double clicked on my computer, and eurika, the F drive was there...tell me if this works...good luck
