I've hooked up my PS3 via HDMI to this monitor and did receive the audio when hooking up my PC headphones to the audio out port on the monitor. I assume it would be the same for the Xbox.
Thank you, I really appreciate your help, but then, what I would like to know is what use does the Audio in connector has? Is it only to serve as a pass through to the Audio out connector, or can you get sound out of the monitor by just connecting only on the Audio in?
I would connect audio in for my any system output to any speaker externally, why would I go through audio in/audio out. Overall product is good. I am satisfied with the product.
I had the same issue as the previous person. Not sure how to get audio out of the monitor. What type of cable is needed to fit into Audio In from the PC. I don't think it was provided. Do I need to purchase speakers also to be able to hear the sound.
As Chris posted no speakers built in, should be a standard for all monitors
I keep thinking I know I can get sound out of monitor somehow without additional speakers, still trying. If no speakers in monitor, where are my beeps error sounds coming from? I will double check manual. Thanks
PC -> HDMI cable -> Monitor -> Audio Out of Monitor -> 3.5 mm jack cable -> speaker
Once you installed the driver for your Dell ST2420L monitor, you will see in Windows 10 / Devices and Printers that AMD HDMI Output (AMD High Definition Audio Device) appears. You can select this if you click on the speaker symbol at the lower right corner of your screen. Then you can connect a speaker to the connector 6 of the monitor (rear view rightmost jack), and tada, the sound is out.
So what Chris said is still true, this is just a little more information to the 'is Line Out only a passthrough from Line In?' question.

The User's Guide makes no mention of internal speakers.
Sound into the monitor from a PC via the #5 Audio Line-In
Sound out of the monitor to speakers or a headset via the #6 Audio Line-Out

* Yes.

* No. There are not any monitor internal speakers.

Another question, if I hook up an Xbox 360 to this monitor via HDMI, will the monitor process audio through Audio out port?
Thanks
