isukatdancing,

Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.

Dell did not install Windows XP on the Inspiron 8000.  When I looked up the service tag on your system, I found a message that says for you to contact the reseller.

There is only one cable plugged in.. its the two wire.  That means theres only the modem??  When I bought it, it says there was a NIC, and here is an ethernet port on the notebook.. is there a place where i can plug in the 12 wire cable?  on the card inside, it still says actiontec, waht does it mean??

Thanks a lot

1394 is the firewire port.  You need to verify you have a modem/NIC combo card in your 8000.  Open the mini-pci cover on the bottom of the notebook and see if the card in there has one or two cables plugged to it.  If two (2-wire and 12-wire) then you have a combo card.  Then look at the name on the card - Actiontec or 3Com.  If Actiontec, use the Actiontec 8255x Network driver link in my sig below.  If 3Com, look here.

Looks like your only recourse at this time is to try and locate a NIC/modem combo card or get a PCMCIA solution - get one with the RJ-45 plug built in and not on a cable "dongle". For a mini-pci solution this would work:
