Unlike your cable box or dvd player, HDMI from a computer video card doesn't have sound. Add audio cables from your sound card to the tv and it will work. HDMI from the video card is only video. If you think about it, computer monitors don't have sound. The sound comes from your sound card and speakers.

The question I was asking was intended to find out if you had any unknown devices in the list; things with questionmarks.  On at least one of the laptops having HDMI as an option, there is an additional driver in the graphics adapter driver folder.  That one had a folder marked HDMI.  The solution for the owner was to use the "Update Driver" option to install that driver.

Reading your most recent post, however, it appears you have the drivers.  One suggestion I can make is to connect the HDMI cable to both laptop and display with the power off on both.  Power up the display, and after it has gotten through self test and is operating normally, set it to the HDMI port and power up the laptop.  Sometimes the hardware needs to know its connected to something before the software can detect the connection.

You say you have HDMI marked as the default playback device.  Have you also used the Advanced Option to find out what speaker connection is available?

I don't see anything under any of the subsections of device manager marked with a question mark, would I have to right click and look at every driver too?

And I have tried the restart thing etc. And the configure option for hdmi is not clickable which they said is because the audio is going to tv so there is nothing to configure on the comp's end.

And to the first poster, yes this comp is supposed to play audio through hdmi with everything I have. But what cables are you talking about? I don't have any other ports out of computer that seem to apply to what you are talking about.

Just in case Dell-Bill B's link doesn't work for you (as it didn't for me), try this one:  XPS 1640 ATI 4670 Driver.  Incidentally, I did look at this one, and yes, it has the HDMI driver contained within it.  Hopefully just installing the driver update per Dell-Bill B's instructions will resolve this for you.

None of the drivers ended up working from the initial post. I was really hoping they would.:emotion-6:

  • uninstall any non-MS or non-Cyberlink codecs you have have installed.

None ever installed.

  • bring up the sound mixer from the volume control icon in the system tray and make sure no other audio applications are using the HDMI playback device. If one is, you should see a volume slider for it.

There are no applications in the hdmi section in the sound mixer.

  • disable Dreamscene if you have it running.

I have no idea what this is, but I searched to see if I might have it and don't to my knowledge.

  • make sure the HDMI device in the sound mixer is not muted.

It is not muted in the bottom of the system tray or in the IDT Audio Control Panel.

  • Are you running any of the enhanced sound software suites (Creative Soundblaster HD, etc)?

I have Creative Sound-Blaster X-Fi MB, but I don't believe it runs by default or that it is running now.

Alright, i'll look into the situation with the soundblaster. And my tv is a Vizio SV470XVT1A, although the 1A on the end might not be that significant.

EDIT: I don't have the disks for the soundblaster so I guess I can't uninstall it unless I could put the files on a hard drive or something first. Anything else I could do about it?

A couple of questions:

What is the file type you're attempting to play (.mp3, .flac, .ogg, .wma)?

Does the issue persist even with other media programs? If you don't have another media player on your computer, go do a google search for "VLC media player." Install and test the same file using that program. Are you still getting the same weird result?

If you are, go out and download the "k-lite codec pack" (without quotes). Install and try to play the file again. Post results.

Also do other sounds seem to work over HDMI? (system sounds, browser-initiated sounds such as audio for a youtube video or playing a pandora radio station)

Nothing comes across the hdmi. And I instaled klite, but I don't know if I did it right. I don't have that player you mentioned installed, but I want to play stuff outside of the player and I don't know if it allows for that. So far as klite goes, I installed it pretty much the way it wanted to be installed. I installed the mega version and the 64bit version, but as I said I'm not sure if I did it right. And it didn't work either way. Thanks for the continued support!

At this point I'm wondering if it's not a problem with your individual system?

I would love to know if anyone else is getting this problem with the Studio XPS 1640.

I'm stumped!

Yeah, I'm beginning to think the same thing...maybe a problem with the physical port or something. Sigh. I guess I will call Dell the next time I have a lot of free time. I hope they have worked out my warranty carry over by now.

i had the same problem with my studio xps 1640 last night (yes to video, no to audio), however, upon restarting my machine today while hooked up to the hdmi output, the audio will play through the device on the other side (in my case, a yamaha soundbar for audio and a pioneer 6010 for video).  when you right click on the little speaker icon in the lower right and click "playback devices", what are your options?  i get the following:

1 - ATI HDMI Output (ATI Function Driver for High Definition Audio - ATI AA01) - The status here is "Not plugged in" when its not connected and there's a little red down arrow by it.

2 - Speakers / Headphones (IDT High Definition Audio CODEC) - The status here is "Working"

3 - Independent (R.T.C.) Headphones (IDT High Definition Audio CODEC) - The status here is "Working"

i'm not a computer wizard at all, but i'll do what i can to help since it seems like i have the same machine and i didn't find anything else online about the problem

My boyfriend and I have just purchased a Dell Studio XPS16 (arrived about two weeks ago) and we're having the exact same problem.

Well... pretty much.

Two things can/will happen when we plug in the HDMI cable:

1) No sound through to tv, but sound comes out of laptop's own speakers still

2) No sound through to tv and no sound out of laptop speakers

Playing around in device manager (disabling/enabling sound devices etc) can sometimes get the sound to work on the laptop again, as well as restarting the laptop, but this isn't a guaranteed solution. So far NOTHING we have done has gotten the sound to work through the tv. And this is all sounds, system sounds, mp3s, game sounds, etc.

Right now we're following the instructions on installing the new driver that were posted above and we'll see what happens.

We chose not to install the extra audio software on the laptop when we bought it so everything is very vanilla.

---- (10 mins later) ---

Okay, kinda followed the instructions... And I DO have sound on the tv now (yay!) but I'm not sure if it's going to last......

So here's what I did... I followed the instructions up to the point where I had to update the sound driver. It wouldn't let me update it by browsing for the file (everytime I clicked it it would just say 'you already have the best driver') so I went with the second option (select from a list of available drivers) and replaced the ATI driver with one that sounded very generic (High Def Audio). I got a warning that things could potentially become unstable by installing that driver, but I clicked install anyway.

And on reboot - tada! sound came out of the tv. The next test will be to see if 1) I keep sound, 2) I still have normal laptop-speaker sound and 3) does it work when running the old game we were trying to play (Diablo 2).....

But now it's time for dinner, so I'll update on our progress later!

What driver did you install? I'm sure I've already tried it, but I want to do it again with your instructions.

And to the other poster, my playback devices list the same things but when hdmi is plugged in, it does say it is working. And it becomes the default when its plugged in as well. I can't get it to play through the tv or the comp at that point until I disable the hdmi playback device and makes speakers default.

EDIT: OMG! I am so happy! Thank you so much! Mine is working now too! I followed your directions!!! I went to update driver, browse, select from list and then just picked high def audio (the one without ati in front) and its working now!!! You should have seen my shock when the audio started suddenly through the tv!!! I'm so pleased!

September 23rd, 2009 17:00

hahaha :D That's awesome! I'm glad it worked for you too :D

And yep, I selected the driver without the 'ATI' at the front so yep, you've done what I did... and we have audio now!! YAY :)

The only thing I haven't checked yet is whether the audio is still happy without the HDMI cable plugged in and whether it survives a reboot (my boyfriend and I were too excited that it was finally working last night to want to do any testing that might break it :P) but hopefully all will be okay :)

And yeah, you should've seen my surprise when it worked as well - I just about got up and did a dance! lol

I'm really happy yours is working now too :) Thanks so much for starting this thread, otherwise I'd still be in the dark on how to fix it!

Pauline_Hill,

thanks a million for posting your solution! I have been trying to keep a record of the ways to enable HDMI audio and it seems like every model has a different process to make it work.
