DELL Studio XPS 435t/9000 Card Reader problem

I received my DELL XPS9000 desktop exactly one month ago. In the first week, the hard drive failed. So Dell sent a technician replaced the hard drive.

Last week, the card reader will not read SD card. I found there is an "Unknow Device" under Universal Serial Bus Controllers of computer Device Manager. I got following result after runing DELL self-diagnostic - "Test Results:Device Initialization Error, Error Code 5D00:0009, Msg: UUTUSBTM - DEVICE_INITIALIZATION_FAILURE User must reattach unit on ROOT HUB port 3 and re-start test".

Contacted DELL XPS tech support. The agent couldn't resolve the problem after installing several drivers. So he will schedule to send a technician to replace the card reader.

It seems that I am not alone with this issue. I am wondering if there is system design flaw with this lovely computer.

I've had this problem forever. Problem is that the media reader is left in a 'strange' state due to a BSOD, and I found not ALL BSOD's cause this.

My 435T shipped with Vista, and not until I upgraded to W7 was I able to get a handle on this. W7 reported the device was not working. Prior to this Dell replaced the device and cable. The device re-appeared, only to stay for about 2 weeks. I had it happen once before that too, and support had me try to remove and reinsert the cables, however I couldn't reach them (Support hung up before I could try it) and had only tried the device itself, not at the motherboard. I called back and said I couldn't and they sent the parts out. Later before the parts arrived I decided to try again by taking the screw out, but I loosened it and was afraid the screw would drop into the system and tightened it up. The device was working again? However, 2 weeks later it failed. Parts sent and installed and it was working.

2 weeks about go by and it fails. Dell wanted me to install Vista again and format during install. I balked and got them to do the next thing. Send a motherboard... and they did, it was installed, and the device worked. Changing the motherboard solved another problem, 2nd DVD drive would open randomly and close when I opened it the first time, after that, worked OK. That stopped happening.

After that, I installed W7. Got a BSOD running DVD Flick (there are reports of it failing on Dell's due to IASTOR, the SATA driver) and on re-boot, W7 reported a USB device was not working. Well, the Media Reader was gone... opened the case, messed with the cables on the motherboard side, closed case, re-boot, and it was working again... now I knew the 'fix'.

Turns out the fix is REALLY SIMPLE, pull the power cord, wait for the green light to go out and a little longer, plug the power cord back in and reboot. Problem fixed.

Well, I'd call it a work-around. The real problem is the USB device is not getting initialized, either because the BIOS doesn't do it on power up or the device was in such a state it couldn't be. Removing power resets it.

I hope this works for you.

Hello Irv. Thank you very much for your reply!

You are really a genius. I pull the power cord out, wait for the green light to go out, then plug the power cord back in and reboot. WOW, the problem fixed. The card reader is back. This is my best Christmas excitement. DELL should pay you consultant fee.

My computer used to start a bit slow. It would freeze at user account page for at least one minute. After I did your method, it reboot fast and back to life immediately.

I checked event viewer. All those error message disappeared. I guess they are related  to the card reader before.

I am very disappointed about DELL XPS tech support. When I talked to Dell service rep several days ago about this problem, the service rep. seems never heard about card reader problem before. He tried to install several different card reader drivers first, then ask me to open the computer to check the wiring. His decision is to replace the card reader for my computer. Now I have to call him back just to tell him it is unnecessary now.

I am wondering if there is any communication between DELL tech support reps? Are those guys read this forum? Have they got training about XPS desktop? Will DELL find solution about this ongoing issue?

This is my first DELL desktop. I hope it is not the last one.

Thank you Irv S again!

Wish you a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

I'm so disgusted with Dell I will never buy another PC from them again. I've purchased 3 Dell PC's over the last year in half. Two for myself, one for my daughter. Most recent was the XPS-435t in July 2009. It takes exactly 12 minutes for this PC to turn on, after dealing with the tech's they did something online, when rebooting it turned on in 3 minutes. The next day it took 12 minutes again. I paid extra for the Data Safe, when writing to Dell order support via e-mail I received a return e-mail I needed to contact tech support to resolve the problem. Meanwhile tech support told me I needed to contact order support. My Dell Dimension E520 the very 1 st Dell I ever purchased works great & still works great after being almost 2 years old.

I bought the XPS to watch, record TV & movies but I can't even get WinTV Hauppauge Video Card to work. I'am going to ditch this XPS-435t either in January or February 2010. I've purchased pretty much all brand name pc's over the past decade to experiment with each to see who made the best in meeting with my demands. I thought since my last Dell & my daughter's Dell were excellent PC's with no problems I would buy from Dell again, so I purchased the XPS-435t. A complete disaster, major disappointment & a great loss investing a little over $2,100 in Dell.

I purchased a brand new Sony Bravia XBR9 HDTV to use as a monitor, it arrived today, what a wonderfull TV & works excellent with both of my Dell PC's. So I think come January or February 2010 I will buy a Sony PC to watch, record TV & movies while I use the older Dell to work on with my Adobe Creative & Office programs. Dell does not seem to care from what I've been reading over the past 6-months. This model has nothing but complaints with no one resolving the problem. Dell attempted to resolve it by changing the name of it to cover up the problem & not cover the problem with their customer.

Well Irv, just a quick thank you to say I encountered the same problem and pulling the plug corrected the issue.  Weird solution but it worked.  Thank you!

Thanks for this information. It saved me.

Well, just as I promised in my earlier message when describing the problem I encountered with this Dell PC, I purchased an HP PAVILION ELITE - 180t PC & love everything about it. I've been using it for 4-weeks now and it is dynamic. I DO NOT experience waiting 10 to 12 minutes for my PC to turn on or while rebooting after Microsoft installs updates anymore. I reformatted the Dell Studio XPS 435t and got rid of a PC I owned for only 8-months. Because of the salesman and tech support I can guarantee Dell lost me as a customer who purchases two new PC's usually every 18 to 24 months. Anyone thinking about purchasing a Dell PC, please read about the PC before purchasing it most important how tech support handled these problems, something I did not do on this particular PC.

I completely agreed with Mark of Zorro. The way Dell handling the USB problem is unacceptable.  The technical folks of Dell seems have no clue what is the roots of the problem and they never be able to resolve it .

This my first Dell as well my Dell.

I have nearly the same problem.  Left for a few days, came back, started up the system (Dell Inspiron 537S, Windows 7 64-bit) and all of a sudden its USB armageddon.  USB harddrive not recognized, USB TV Tuner not recognized, USB 7 port external hub not recognized.  Stumbled across this post and thought problem solved.  Shut down, unplugged overnight, next day started up and SAME problem, no magic cure.

I have updated BIOS and all drivers, problem remains, ran diagnostics and everything passes except I get two Error code 5D00:0009 Device init failure  Root Hub Port 2 (or 5 or 7) it moves around, re-attach device, etc.  Nothing seems to work.  Even did a system restore back to when everything worked.

Everything was working when I shut down the system and left for three days.  I made no changes to hardware or software.  Just booted it up and now USB (except for keyboard/mouse and label printer) doesn't work.  I'm about ready to call Dell and have them replace the Motherboard.  Any ideas?

Hello all,

I too, had the same issue with the SD card reader on the front of the machine.  Worked great, but konked out after several weeks of use and would NOT read SD cards.  USB still worked when I plugged in a device (camera w/ SD card in the device or USB head phones, etc.) but plug in an individual SD card in the slots and no love for H00VER.

MANY thanks to Argonite!!!!

Just wanted to say that unplugging, waiting a few seconds (30ish) and then plugging back in and powering up fixed my SD Card reader issue as well.  System now sees all SD slots and reads from them just fine!

Try different keyboard.  I had a logitech backlit that caused same slow boot.  Changed to old dell wireless and the thing is fast.

It would be unusual if Dell did not know about it; it is possible that they do and that your tech didn't look hard enough for it in the various internal databases/kb's - it happens.  Also, the forum is a users helping users forum, so just because it is posted here, doesn't mean Dell support will know about it.  Except for a very few Dell employees here in a largely moderating role, support agents do not use these boards in an official capacity.

I had this identical problem; spent 1 hour with Tech Support and they are replacing the card reader.  I then found this posting - disconnected the electric for 30 seconds and the card reader works fine.  Two years after the original posting with solution and Dell Support still does not know about the problem.

I just want to add that I had the exact same issue after installing DVD FLick--got a BSOD, then uninstalled DVD Flick but subsequently got the message that a USB device was not working and the Media Readers no longer worked. I didn't even make the connection to DVD Flick until reading this. THANK YOU for posting this solution--the unplugging did the trick and saved me countless hours on the phone with tech support. My Dell is an XPS Studio 435T.

Thanks VERY VERY VERY much for this post  - I don't understand what the problem is exactly and the exact nature of WHY what you said works... and why Dell doesn't know either, but regardless, it got it to work so THANKS!
