Sounds like a faulty inverter - an LCD shop can repair for $100 or so.

It's up to you, but a new inverter board is pretty cheap (<$25), and the replacement is not difficult for the average DIYer. In most cases, you do not even need to remove the display from the laptop. Here is the relevant section from your service manual.
