UPDATE: I received a call today (11/2) from the Dell Support group. They followed up with the production department, and were told that the i7 720QM processors are on backorder. There is no real estimate on delivery other than the given standard ship date.
The Core i7 is not fully ramped in production - it is on worldwide allocation. Other than a retail (pre-built) system - and even these are in short supply -- if you don't believe that, look through newegg.com - out of hundreds of models, just six are i7s -- you'll be waiting a while if you order one of them.
Update: Received call today (11/9) from Dell Customer Service in response to an email I sent. Other than the usual "we can't tell you anything you can read on your online account." I was now told that it is not the processor that is the problem ("I can assure you") haha "Please let me check....oh it's your whole system that is being delayed." I was told again that it would surely be on its way by the 11/18 ship date. When asked what me order date was I was told 10/22. WRONG! That was the re-entered date. I had to explain that my original order date was 9/25.
UPDATE: This is getting comical at this point. My original order was placed 9/25/09 for a XPS 1645 with a ship date of 10/26. That was changed to an order date of 10/22/09 with a ship date of 11/18/09. TODAY: 11/9/09 the order was changed (i.e. new order...wouldn't want it to look like it was actually 11 weeks after I ordered it) with a new ship date of 12/8/09.
For those of you thinking about ordering a laptop with a i7 720QM processor...forget it. I ordered this thing 2 days after they hit the market (Big Mistake), and I will not have my laptop after 2 1/2 months.
I totally agree with you BuckeyeNerd. I've ordered my sxps 16 at Oct 15th. On Nov 9th I had to call directly to dell through many transfer to reorder my laptop due to a ridiculous mistake dell made with all the sxps 16 ordered before Oct 20 or so I believe, and the problem was a win7 driver issue with the 320 - 2955 ID wifi card(they should have done the testing before having it available to people to purchase). Simple mistake like that creates so many problems and so many angry customers. Even how dell resolves this problem is ridiculous. I also can't believe people who have ordered this same laptop like a week earlier recieved it already!!
I had exactly the same situation with my Studio XPS16. I ordered it on Oct 4th and it was delayed several times. Then Dell cancelled my order and re-entered it with the explaination that the wifi card driver was not compatible with the XPS16 (what a joke). I wonder what the real reason was??? So my new order was placed on 11/08. ETA is 12/03. However, just checked today and order is still in "Pre-Production" which means nada....HAS ANYONE ACTUALLY RECEIVED A i7 Studio XPS16 from DELL???? Are they really shipping any of these??? DELL SUCKS....PLEASE DON'T ORDER DELL STUDIO XPS 16 i7. DELL CANNOT DELIVER THESE. YOUR ORDER WILL BE STUCK IN PRE-PRODUCTION FOREVER. SUPPORT SUCKS. THEY ARE TOLD TO BLATENTLY LIE TO YOU! THEN THEY CANCEL YOUR ORDER AND RE-ENTER IT SO IT LOOKS LIKE YOU HAVE ONLY A 3 WEEK DELAY INSTEAD OF AN 11 WEEK DELAY. THIS IS BAD. DELL IS BAD. THE PROOF IS IN THE STOCK PRICE (WHICH HAS BEEN IN THE TOILET FOR YEARS). TIME TO MAKE THE SWITCH TO HP!

Same exact situation and dates here! I ordered on 10/04 with initial delivery date of 11/02, date passed, no laptop, then postponed to 11/09, then order canceled without explanation and then reentered. My status finally changed from pre-production to in production with an EDD of 12/03. I'll believe it when I see it. What a public relations nightmare for Dell, and their handling of it is abhorrant! At least they changed my shipping to overnight with no charge. I can't find a Core i7 820 laptop available anywhere, only 720's....maybe the problem lies with Intel?

Okay Dell, What if I say this:
I will send you the money 3 weeks after I receive the laptop.
Bank error, I assure you that you will have the money within next 2 weeks ( no extra, sorry)
Hum...I don't have money this time. I promise to transfer it to you next 2 weeks ok.
I know you have been waiting for 7 weeks for total, but you will have to wait more. I will expedite (but to me, expedite means : the same)
I know you are angry but it's Dell..oh oh sorry, I mean..it's me, not you, ok.
Sorry, I don't know if I can give the money to you or not. Just let me cancel this payment and re-enter a new date.
(I just want to make it seems like it has been delayed just 1 week.)
Enjoy waiting...! (without even sure that you will have the money or not)
