Returning it for a refund would definitely be my preferred way.  I just didn't really give too much consideration since the original poster of this thread was forced to sell his laptop privately after owning it for 2 months, and I've had mine for 3.  I would definitely try for a full refund, but it seems unlikely.  It is kind of surprising that they couldn't work out a deal.  If someone has a bad experience like that, then they are going to tell everyone they know not to touch a Dell ever again.  I know I'm going to do the same if things don't work out!

Hi,

I live in the Netherlands and there seems to be no contact at all with the main developers department. My refund procedure is started (after 2 months). They can call me every minute to make an appointment to pick it up and pay me back. So I can tell you that they will pay you back after two months. They tell me that they cannot fix it for me.

Is the BIOS A04 for the 1557 earlier than the return action?????? And do I have the time to test it????

If true, this would be great news!  Has anyone else heard from Dell on this matter?  I'll wait until Thursday, and if nothing happens, then I'll talk to Dell about sending back my laptop.  There is no way I will get a refund for it because I've had the 1557 for a while now, so hopefully I'd be able to get a different model and pay the difference.

I agree with with lazyenergy. Hope the best for Thursday, but with the refund situation, I too have had the laptop for while, since they first introduced the i7 to the studio models, and I strongly agree that they WILL either have to give full refund or a fair trade, because they have basically been lying to us with all the problems it had. Me, already having to replace the subwoofer (which by the way at first they claimed it didn't even have a subwoofer installed!) and having the motherboard replaced. And the addition of the ATI graphics card problem with the i7 and the hot touchpad/bottom area of laptop. Basically, I think they should give a refund or a deal because there are few of us with problems. I'm sure everyone payed a fair amount of money and everyone will return theres if this is not fixed soon. With the money I spent on this, I expected it to be flawless, which Dell has failed to do so. Its basically false advertisement, I'm not getting the full satisfaction. It's just not fair, but with all of us we will succeed.

Well, it's noon eastern and no bios update posted yet!  Just for fun I thought everyone might like to hear it straight from the horses mouth (so to speak).  Here's the voicemail left by Dell on Monday.

Would've loved to listen to the voicemail, but my 1557 crashed...

KIDDIN'!

Fun aside... we're deep in 4th of March territory and there's no BIOS update in sight.

Darn... I told myself I shouldn't, but still got my hopes high.

I've got a couple emails out but haven't gotten any official answer other than "the BIOS exists but hasn't been released".    Don't know if that means it is still in validation / testing or whether its passed but is waiting for replication across all the download servers.

Looks like this might be it for my 1557 then.  I've waited as long as I can.  Like guyo2010, I didn't really want to get my hopes up, but I was still waiting to see if they had a bios for it today.  However, even if they do release a bios update and fix this issue, there seems to be a lot of problems with the 1557. I've lost confidence in Dell, and I don't even know if I'd want to move to another dell laptop.  Coincidentally, today I received an email/ad from Dell about the studio XPS, and that was probably the only other laptop I'd consider getting.  Might have to do some research in the forums and see what people are experiencing with this one before I decide to pull the trigger and get one, or if I take my business elsewhere.

HI,

Does this BIOS update also fix the freezing issue?

So it is now March 5th at 8:15AM EST and there is still no update posted for the 1557 bios. This is just frustrating. I get that it takes time to debug/fix/test/deploy, and I get that dates are often missed, but it has been 4 months now and this still is not resolved. Not even at acknowledgment that they are working on the issue is found in their support pages. I think they really dropped the ball on this one.

Hi,

I can fully understand the frustration but this just shows why we don't give out ETAs on these sort of releases.  I don't know where the March 4th date came from.  Someone could have made it up or just said it hoping it was true, but that date didn't come from us here on the forums.

I do know they are working to validate a new BIOS but there are a lot of things involved in doing that.  First, does it actually resolve the issue that it is intended to fix?  Next, does it cause any other issues?   Third, does it work across all configurations of that model?   I'm sure there are other questions that are involved in validating the BIOS revisions but that should give you an idea.

That said, we are still pushing internally to get a better idea of when and what the BIOS is going to do.   When I get more concrete information that I can release I will do so.

Hi,

Is there a way to put in a word for us in returning the laptop for the people who have been robbed of this product.

Hi,

I'm done..... My system will be picked up next Monday.

My advice to every 1557 owner: get a full refund, it can be done. I got it after 2 months. They try to replace it but you have the rights for a full refund. Dell cannot fix the problem at this moment. They confirmed that. Don’t give up.

It's over for me.

Success

my original post was removed due to an un-intended prohibited word:

Here's an update on the 1557 bios...there is going to be one, but they don't know when.  After talking to 5 people at Dell, I finally found someone who talked to the developer department, and they said they are currently in the research phase of the problem.  They are aware there is an issue with the chipset and the iphone, and they are working toward a solution.  It was refreshing to finally hear that they acknowledged the problem, after talking to 4 people previously who had no clue and just wanted to try software diagnostics.  So anyway, it's safe to say we are not going to see a bios update in week, two weeks, probably even 4 weeks.  The manager said that the developer team didn't know when an update would be out, but that they are working on the issue.  It should be noted that the manager for tech support was the only person who knew about the issue, so don't bother talking to the first person on tech support.  Ask to talk to a manager first.

I also inquired about returning my laptop, and you can do that through tech support, but they can only give you back the same model, so that doesn't help us here.  In order to get a different model, you will have to talk to customer support.  I haven't talked to customer support yet, but I think I will tomorrow.  I hope this isn't a painful process.  I'm looking at the Studio XPS 16, but there seems to be a good number of issues with that laptop as well.  At least it will work with the iphone though.

So here are some things I've learned:

  1. Don't let technical support try to diagnose the problem, be adamant that it will not fix anything, as this is a known hardware issue.
  2. Dell has acknowledged the chipset and iphone problem and are working on it.
  3. The bios update is going to be a while still
  4. You will get different answers depending on who you talk to in technical support.  Ask for the manager.
  5. Apparently you can return your laptop through customer support.

==================================

...LATE BREAKING NEWS:

While typing this reply, and just about to hit send, I received a call from the manager.  I'm kinda shocked, but he made some more calls after we got off the phone and he said that the bios update will actually be done March 4th or 5th(so much for March 4th, hey!).  What a turn of events.  He says we should expect to see it next week once it hits the servers, but they are anticipating it should be done this week.  He confirmed this will fix the iphone issue.  With the news I was receiving from him only moments before, I thought there was no way it would even be March, so this is pretty incredible.  I would take it on good authority that the fix will come out next week, because he was extremely knowledgeable about the issue, and he spent the time and effort to do more research.

So, maybe I can wait one more week....we'll see....

The only issue that I raised with support was the iphone problem, so I'm not aware of what else is going to be in the update.
