As a bios update will require a reboot anyway, have you considered just using a Linux Live CD (e.g. SuSE Desktop), putting the bin file on a USB key, mounting the USB key in the live OS and then try to flash from there?

Dell only supports Red Hat and SuSE as an OS, so their bin files for updates should work with one of those OSes for sure.

As Red Hat doesn't do a linux live CD from what I've seen, but SuSE does, I suggested SuSE.

this is what I have been doing all along. I use knoppix 6.2, based lenny and on kernel:
~
knoppix@Microknoppix:~$ uname -r
2.6.31.6
~
 with my USB micro drive

Is there a specific reason why you are suggesting to me to use SuSE?

The guys at ducea.com were able to easily do it using a live CD based on etch, but one of the needed libsmbios* libraries doesn't exist anymore in lenny, namely: libsmbiosxml*
~
Since many people out there are using live CDs for all kinds of things, I think DELL should also prepare their live CDs for those sorts of things

I actually used an etch-based liveCD without any problems whatsoever (even if it was a Greek version of knoppix) I found here:
~
 http://downloads.sourceforge.net/project/knoppel/knoppel/knoppel-08/knoppel-08.iso
~
and these very well written instructions

~
Now if I could find similar instructions to update the ESM so that the fans are not so noisy! . . . :-)
~
 Than you
