Rizuan:

I have had the same problem: freezing the XPS1340.

In short, if I install the driver nVidia MCP79 Chipset V.4.69, A00 (from http://www.megaupload.com/?d=9W79PDOK) I will solve my problems?

Can I use all the other drivers (for Windows 7) which are available from Dell? Even the video driver ...

That is, all problems are related to the chipset driver?

Thank you in advance for your help!

Best Regards

Hi educocar,

Yes, you can use the rest of the latest drivers provided by Dell, except for the chipset. Dell too slow or may be will not release any update for the chipset driver. I think Dell's software engineer just take all the driver from the manufacturer and that's all. Slow and unefficient.

Here's more details and detailed solution on the exact SATA controller driver issue...

Installing the older chipset driver as indicated in the link is clearly another way to go but you don't get the 'benefits' of the other fixes that may be there. Your mileage may vary.

Just a follow-up.  It has now been 3 days since I applied the fix suggested by the posts of RiZuan, alexsirota, and educocar.  In that time, I have not had a single freeze and everything has been operating smoothly.  My Dell XPS 1340 has been operating like the cool laptop I anticipated when I bought it.  Thanks, guys, for the tip and the R202284.exe ZIP file was an easy, quick cure for me.

There are at least 3-4 busy forums one with about 300 responses that points to the freezing HDD LED light problem. Search tags "M1340 freeze" and you'll find them.

This is not only a Windows 7 problem, as I had the same problem on Vista 64-bit as well. This driver set with v11.x SATA controller drivers should be promptly removed from the DELL website as they are CAUSING a problem when they are installed, rather than fixing it. Anyone alert Dell to these threads yet? 2285 results on that search and counting...

Hi there,

I know it's been a while since this thread was a hot topic, however I still face the problem. I called Support many times, they replaced my mainboard, but still on Windows 7 my dell frezees. I checked whether the problem is replicable on Vista Ultimate or not. I was very supprized but for more than a week it was working without any single freeze. So I decided to try again with W7 (last time I called the Support, they told me that dell 1340 is compatible with W7 but it was not fully tested - based on http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/dsn/en/document?journalid=826F13EF31214508E040AC0A63E94556&docid=364752. )

After installing fresh W7 [x64] i left it for, like 20 hours - there was no freeze. Then I decided to install Chipset driver (W7 driver brought freeze in 3 hours, but according to RiZUaN Vista driver helped). After another few hours I installed the rest of missing drivers (yes,I decided to leave those which were already  detected by OS). Then, again I left my dell for more than 24 hours and it didn't hang, so I installed Touchpad, BT and dell 5530 (modem) software. Frezee!
It's not related to any kind of file transfer - I just leave it and after few minuts / hours I'm not able to do anything but switch it off.
It happens also without battery.

I try  to find out which of them had caused the problem again. Does Anybody know the solution ? Any ideas ?
I've also observed that whenever my dell switches to Sleep mode - there is no way to restore it, however I'm not sure if it's the same problem.

I would be really grateful for any piece of advise.

Hi HiTrUs,

I read your post, but you didn't mention about BIOS. Are you using the latest one ? If you still facing the same problem then, you might want to install Windows 7 in front of Dell engineer. This is what I've done before to proof that my previous laptop (before replacement) was faulty, and they did see the blue screen. Before that, they said that the problem was from using 'pirate' software. You might want as well be patient with them. The support from Dell UK is great, but not their product, especially XPS Studio.

For the freezing problem, I just use the Vista Chipset Driver, and set my Nvidia Hybrid Sli Graphics to save power mode to reduce the heat.

Currently, I don't have any issue with this laptop, except for error for my face detection program. Recently I've purchased an extra 2 years warranty from Dell. This is my first time buying extra warranty because I still think that this laptop may fail in the remaining 2 years.

Hi RiZUaN,

Thanks for really fast response.
Before my mainboard was replaced I upgraded the BIOS to version A11. Once they replaced it - A11 was already on board. Actually when the engineer came to replace mobo I had fresh install of Widnows 7 and it did freeze in front of him ;-) however he had been there to fix the problem by replacing the mainboard. And so he did. After 3 hours I called him because of another freeze. I was asked to reinstall the OS but it didn't help.

Regarding Support from UK, lucky you. I'm from Poland and situation here is slightly different. I have the feeling that a customer with non-standard problem is highly unlike one.

Yesterday I installed fresh OS + Vista Chipset driver + Uninstall NVIDIA AHCI/Sata device + Graphic driver. It's been working for few hours, but not all hardware drivers are installed, yet.
I'm going to check and in it on my own for some time, because I don't believe that people who work as Support are able to help me. Like I wrote previously - last time they told me that functionality for W7 on XPS Studio 1340 was not tested by DELL. Due to that fact I should install Vista instead.

I also though of extending my warranty - but this is tough decision in case of faulty laptop, isn't it?

Have you ever had the problem with Sleep mode?

[Temporarily Solved], Actually this is not a best compatible  solution to resolve the problem for win7 yet. If you try to compare with two different verion nVidia IDE controler drivers for using on PC OS. Then you will be able to find out what the difference is. On the heating temperature control, the latest defect  ver. IDE  driver is better than older ver. one on the win7 OS...... We still have to find the solution for.....

In fact, we should install microsoft standard ahci  ATA controler  driver 1.0 version for using, if you could feel harddriver and motherboard's temperature higher than before or hear much more fan noise from CPU fan vent on the back of laptop PC. It is better than nVidia driver on 64 bit OS compatibility. But on the other hand, it is not very good for supportting new  type SATA II hard drives.......We have to report to dell surpport dep. and provide a  updated chipset driver.....  :emotion-12:

Hi Hitrus,

I don't use the sleep mode. Just want to alert you guys out there, Dell has released BIOS A14 and nVidia Chipset A04. It said that the BIOS is for B02 chipset. I think we can give a try since the previous BIOS (A11), it is also for B02, and I have no problem using it!

I hope this is the solution to our problems. I will test and update later.
