Hi,

I've just upgrated BIOS to A14 and install fresh Windows 7 X64. First freeze occured after 1hour - all drivers were installed. 2 days ago I tried Vista (again) and it works fine - no problem for 2 days. I have no idea what might be the reason which causes the freeze problem, but I'm going to find it.

Please let me know if you have any ideas.

How about the chipset driver ? Have you tried ? Did you notice that Dell have driver installation order ? Refer here. You should make sure that the installation of the drivers is in order.

I tried both. Neither helped :(

I know about the order. I was informed about this during my first long call with the support. However I told them that it's quite strange because when I installed RC version everything was fine regardless of the order ;-). Moreover, I noticed that NSS application and Wireless Atheros 1515 driver are missing. Until now they did nothing about that - this is how they support me ;-)

Again I’ve installed fresh W7 to be 100% sure that problem appears with one of the driver. It's going to take me a while as I want to check each of them for more than 24 hours. I'll let you know about the progress and please let me know if you have any other ideas =)

Update 31/03/2010 11PM - my dell has been working for 24 hours without freeze. It makes me quite sure that one of installed driver is responsible for what I've been trying to solve for more than a month.

I could switch back and forth between A00 and A02 drivers (without rebuild) to fix or reproduce the issue at will. Having run for quite some time with the old Driver I have now applied both Chipset Drivers (A04) and the AHCI fix for the the lock up issue and also latest BIOS (though this is not needed for this lock up issue). I could switch back and forth between A00 and A02 drivers (without rebuild) to fix or reproduce the issue.

My nVidia SATA driver is now version 11.1.51.3 and all looks good so far. The Bench Test within the driver gives results the same as the old A00 driver, much better than the A02 driver and the laptop has been behaving and rebooting as it should with none of the lockups experienced with the A02 driver. It is however my first day of use so only time will tell.

I will update after a few days of use to say for sure. Fingers crossed though!

I still don't know what is the reason of hang-ups in my laptop. As I've already mentioned I upgraded BIOS. Then I installed fresh W7. I decided to leave it for 24 hours and nothing happened. So, I installed Chipset driver (the latest one) and waited another 24 hours, then Graphic card + 24hrs, Lan + 24, Sound card + 24, Modem + 24, Touchpad + 24. The first freeze occurred after installing BT driver. So, I formatted HDD and did all those things (except BT) again but without waiting. It was working fine for ~30 hours (I even installed Card reader driver and ITECIR). ... then I started digging BT problem and I saw this: http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/network-internet-wireless/f/3324/p/19313442/19623287.aspx#19623287 I went through all the options, starting from installing some old drivers to the latest one with uncheck 'Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power'. Even though the freeze had occurred. I'm a little bit confused because it hanged even when I removed the BT card. (That is why I'm not so sure if it is BT actually, however the freeze happens only once I install BT drivers) Right now I'm checking (without BT card) with all other devices’ option 'Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power' unchecked. I've also disabled "USB power share" in BIOS. Frankly, I have no idea whether it might help or not but on the other hand I've already tried almost everything Looking forward for any suggestion from you guys...Especially from Support :)

Hi Hitrus,

I agree with UncleScooby, no freezes after installing the latest chipset driver + AHCI patch. My laptop freezes when I install only the latest chipset driver. I hope this will help.

Hello,

I think, finally i solved my problem. It turned out that BT is fine. The Dell 5530 had been messing. Once I installed drivers taken from Dell XPS Studio 1647, my 1340 has been working for four days without any single freeze.

Thanks a lot for your help.

The Dell XPS Studio 1340 (Dell XPS 13) Nvidia GeForce9400MG driver is not 100% supported either by the supplied drivers from DELL download site or from NVidia. The NVidia Control Panel functions correctly.

I can supply the drivers I used to correct my XPS, however you must also use the DELL supplied NVidia chipset drivers before the video drivers can be initialized correctly. You must also uninstall the Win7 Standard Video drivers.

1. uninstall Win7 Stnd Vid
 2. add the NVidia chipset drivers
 3. add the NVidia 9400MG drivers
 4. rollback the Coprocessor driver (I have been unsuccesful at getting this to work)
3D video rendering is not possible. This will stop the screen saver capability except blank screen. Also, Hibernate and Sleep mode will no longer function. And in some cases you will have to reinstall the DELL QUICKSET to get the keyboard backlight to work.

There are also several other DELL apps that should be reinstalled. Get these from the DELL Locker.
 1. DELL Webcam Central (fix's issues, works great)
 2. Facial recognition ( works, be careful)
 3. Power DVD Player
 4. Roxio Creator DE (may have issues, mine doesnt work)
 5. Sight Speed DELL Video Chat ( Win7 incompatibilty and may not function)
 6. Microsoft FixIt50462.msi does not correct the Sleep mode issue.

The Computer Management will also have minor ActiveX issue.

Hope this is helpful to all who are having trouble with this product and upgrading to Win7

Hi there Akhilesh ,

A few months ago my HDD was replaced - a new one is Hitachi HTS725032A9A.362-(s1). My last hdd did not give any errors, though since the replacement I have no issues with my computer.

I'm going to search for my previous configuration if you still need this piece of information.

Have you tried to run the buitl-in self test already ?

Best regards,

Bartek

Thank you UncleScooby.

I followed your instructions above and the freezing problem has disappeared!

The Chipset Drivers (A04) alone didn't fix it but after I installed the AHCI driver (nVidia nForce AHCI Controller) + reboot, the problem appears to be fixed.

Again, thanks very much!

SlowRoast,

No problem, glad the post is still helping! I never did get round to commenting back but I have not had the problem again since applying the fix so it is a permanent solution to what was a painful problem to have!
