I was trying to fix that same problem of the bidirectional support not staying enabled. In the end, all it took was for me to restart the computer first. After that, when I selected it, it stayed selected.
I do have to say thanks to the other posts on this subject as to what to do. For the benefit of anyone else who has this problem and is having issues, here are the problems I ran into while trying to follow the instructions:
When you uninstall the old (bad) driver, make sure that you go to the uninstall programs section of the control panel and uninstall the driver (just removing the device isn't enough).
Make sure you run the setup.exe in the proper compatability mode (not the zip file - it tries to run the setup automatically, so you'll have to stop it and then start it again after you have set the compatability mode. Mine was in C:\drivers\printers\924)
After the driver is installed, if it complains about the bidirectional support, restart your computer. Then, go to the printer properties from the Devices and Printers part of the Control Panel and select bidirectional support.
I recently purchased a new laptop with Windows 7. I was able to install the Dell All-in-One Photo 924 printer using the driver installation instructions you provided. However, I was unable to installer it's scanner. As you suggested, I installed the Abbyy FineReader 6.0 Sprint application from the disk provided with the printer, however, I'm still not able to scan. I've tried restarting the computer, but I'm still not able to scan.
Download the Vista 32-bit drivers for Windows 7 32-bit or the Vista 64-bit drivers for Windows 7 64-bit. Install the Vista drivers in the Vista Compatibility mode You'll get a message, the printer is not connected. Connect the printer at this time(powered on).

gar71,
Try using the instructions here...

If the printer does not install, you might have to turn off Virus protection, firewalls and security suites, depending on which one you're using.

celiah,
First run Delete Print Jobs to remove any stuck print job in the queue.
Disconnect the printer.
Download and run the patch(printer cleanup utility) until it prompts you to restart your computer.
Restart your computer. Make sure the printer is removed. Manual Printer Driver Removal
Links to the patch/drivers can be found at...

Remember virus programs and firewalls will blok communications.
