I have a smililar problem with my brand new XPS 1340. Tech support said it was a bad hard drive and a new HD is on the way. Not sure if that is the case or not.
Yeah, upgrading the bios is one of the first things I did.
My guess is that it's either a bad hard drive, which I'll see if its the case when my copy of Windows 7 arrives, or it's overheating. The fan is quite small, and I put my hand over it after playing a game on the PC and it was quite hot. Currently, the laptop is sitting on top of a book so that it can get more airflow. It seems to be working so far.
I have the same problem, my Studio XPS 1340 is about 9 months old, and I have had this problem since abour 5 months ago. I requested a new laptop but they said outside 21 days after purchase they cannot give me a new laptop. I talked about about 10 different tech support people and none of them helped me, I have sent it into the depot twice now, the first time they replaced my memory and it still never fixed it, the second time they replaced my hard drive and it still never fixed it. They I saw the hot topic on the dell website about updating the BIOS and nividia driver which I did and it stopped for about twice weeks and not its back to the same freezing again. NOt one of the tech support told me about the hot topic on their website, I'm getting real sick and tired of this and I feel like I have been ripped off, I spend 2000 dollars on my laptop and it hasn't work right in the past 5 or 6 months. I have ran a virus check, the diagnostics on the disk, formatted it (running Windows 7 64 bit), I'm at the point now where I know the whole conversation that will happen when I call Dell. If anyone has this problem as well, and have any success with Dell please let me know. Thanks
At least in my case, I don't know about yours, I think it's either a dud hard drive or a bad driver. Or perhaps just a bad update. If you're having the issue with 7, I'm less than hopeful it will go away. But I know it came up for me after a Windows update and a couple days after a driver update...so maybe that's to blame?
Hi I am using Studio 1537, 32 bit with Windows Vista and from day one I have had problems with system freezing. I have been really frustrated but found that if I do ctrl, alt, delete and hit the cancel button twice, it will make it unfreeze. This works everytime, but I have not found out how to stop it from freezing. I also have a problem with the sound popping up and going all the way up to 100 and not allowing me to turn it down. The volume box remains on the screen the whole time and them it just disappears by itself after 5-20minutes.
So I installed 7 on my computer (it's sweet) and the freezing problem...seems relatively resolved.
Every once in a while my computer will lock up similarly to how it did before, but after pressing control alt delete a few times or letting a few minutes pass, the problem resolves itself. So I'm thinking it was probably software related, for me, anyway. Probably still a somewhat problematic hard drive, but I'll cross that bridge when I come to it.
In terms of your issue, Kittycat, update your drivers from support.dell.com. If that doesn't help, call Dell. See what they have to offer.
It's really a bit ironic how problematic the XPS lines seem to be. They're great computers, but always end up having some sort of flaw. Or maybe I'm just unlucky. But hey, I can't say I'm not happy with the machine.
Your post and some of the replies were interesting. I have the same computer purchased on 10/18/09 and have had the same problem since day one. Contact with Dell has been a nightmare. They sent me a "Refurbished" hard-drive. Haven't installed it yet and am not looking forward to doing so. "REFURBISHED" now that really makes me mad. A computer that cost $1257.00, barely a month old. even though the system had the problem from day one, but I chose to remain in denial rather than admit what a fool I was for purchasing it.

If under warranty - rush to DELL instantly.
Check RAM memory - reseat / swap / change the modules.
If there are 2 RAM modules, try running on 1. See what happens with the other also.
If it keeps on happening with half the memory (either 2 Gb module) try different memory for a while.
If it's not gone yet - reseat PCI cards, CPU / GPU

there is a partial solution in this thread - but you are not alone withthese problems with XPS 1340
upgrade to BIOS A11 helps, but i am now starting to get some of the problems returning

NEVER AGAIN WILL I PURCHASE A DELL!
