I just got my Dell XPS 16 a few days ago and I hooked it up to my Sony Brevia XBR TV via HDMI. I can see a clear movie picture but the sound is nothing but loud horrible noise. Nothing I do corrects it. It does not do this with MP3 audio, just movies

It's probably because your videos are in 5.1 DTS and your TV isn't capable of playing 5.1 DTS sound without transcoding, this often results in a loud hissing noise while using HDMI. Try playing a normal avi file (not a movie) and see if it works.

Hope this helps

cheers

What version XPS 16 do you have?  I have the 1645 and have also been experiencing some audio related problems.  Although I haven't connected my laptop to any TV yet, sometimes when I go to shutdown the computer, the laptop will hang and I'll get the error "waiting for explorer.exe to play the logoff sound" (or something like that).  Also, sometimes, when I go to play an mp3 or movie file, the audio will be of a lesser quality (drastically) - only come out of one speaker and doesn't sound right at all.  A reboot will almost always fix this problem (and if it doesn't, a second reboot will).  Hard to know what the trigger is in my case, but it seems to be random/spontaneous.  Have you experienced any of these symptoms?  I'll try connecting to a HDMI TV and attempt playing a movie to see what happens.  There is an update for the XPS 16 1645 audio driver, fyi.

I feel there are major audio problems with the Dell Studio & Studio XPS laptops.  I've been following a thread here: http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/3565-63-small-issue-explorer-logoff-sound hoping for an answer.
