Hi, Bluewndrpwrmlk96:

Obviously, some process or program is trying to access your disc drive. You need to look at what's running in the background and figure out which program or process it is by process of elimination.

Hello, ive got the same thing here with a brand new Dell Studio 1555 Laptop. I don't know if its a normal thing that happen with these laptops even when there is no disc inside. Never dropped it ...yet, so there must be something else for a  reason. This eject noise is only when i turn the laptop on and with the normal use of it and after sleep mode. Thanks for the info. And all info is welcome related to this post.

Hi, yoyoMC420:

It sounds to me that your BIOS is set to boot from the CD drive first. That explains why it happens on startup. My suggestion is always to set boot order to CD first then HDD, so I wouldn't change anything.

nothing to do with bios, hdd is first option  but still does the same thing.

for some reason, i think all dell slot-load drive laptops do it (mine is xps m1330). it tries to eject upon startup. and unfortunately ive not found a way to disable it. one thing i found on the forums was inserting a blank dvd. then it doesnt do that terrible noise, just a bit of spin.

I am having the EXACT same problem with my Dell Studio 1555 laptop running Winows 7, 4 GB RAM, 320 HDD. I thought it was the hard drive and replaced it because, in addition to the loud eject noise, the hard drive failed two diagnostics. Replaced the hard drive, but the eject sound on boot up continues. Then I noticed that the sound is identical to the sound I hear when I eject a disk from the CD/DVD player, so I ran the bios to make sure the order was correct (that the hard drive, not the DVD drive, was #1 in the list), and bios was correct. I then decided to put a disk in the disk drive and boot the computer up. Like you, the noise stopped on boot up when a disk was in the drive.

This laptop just came back from Dell's repair depot in Houston, TX, and I will spare you the ugly details -- they did not diagnose the noise, sent the laptop back unrepaired, charged me $179, and finally, sent me a hard drive because, according to their technician, the hard drive failed their diagnostics, too. They should have at least told me what the noise is and whether or not it requires repair.

Anyway, I have decided that the noise is annoying but not a hardware problem since the DVD player works perfectly.
