The next step probably makes no economic sense - replace the mainboard.

I'm assuming from your post that video isn't showing on the external monitor when you tried it?   Or did it?     If it isn't working on an external monitor then ejn63 is probably right, you need to replace the system board.  If it is, and you replaced the LCD screen as well then it could be a loose connection on the video cable.  Or bad connection.
